Man who rushed to help slain soldier remembers Parliament Hill attack

Published Sunday, October 21, 2018

Four years after he tried to help save the life of a Canadian soldier shot in a terrorist attack on Parliament Hill, Martin Magnan says he is still dealing with the emotional repercussions of those events.

“The recovery’s been quite difficult,” Magnan told CTV News Channel on Sunday from Ottawa.

Monday marks the four-year anniversary of the attack which killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and injured several other people at the National War Memorial.

That morning, Magnan was on his way to a coffee shop when he heard the sound of gunfire. Having received military training, he knew instantly that something serious was happening.

“You know what it is. You know that sound,” he said.

“My spine stood up. I ran over.”

Another soldier had been closer and was already tending to Cirillo. Magnan asked what he could do to help and was told to lift the 24-year-old’s legs. He did.

“The whole scene just unfolded itself in a manner of seconds. Time was very different,” Magnan said.

Other bystanders continued to arrive at the scene, with emergency responders shortly behind. Magnan and the others tried to comfort the soldier as he died.

The gunman, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, was shot and killed after making his way inside the Centre Block of Parliament.

Magnan said he went through a “really awful” year after the attack, struggling with post-traumatic stress. Although he still has “ups and downs,” he said support from his family and friends, anxiety medication and seeing a “shaman in the Algonquin tradition” have helped him cope with what he witnessed.

“These are just things you’ve got to get through,” he said.

Although the attack has faded somewhat from the public consciousness since Oct. 22, 2014, Magnan says he believes Canadians remember Cirillo’s sacrifice.

“It’s kind of a window into reality for us,” he said.

“These men and women in uniform – they die. They really do die for us.”

Scheer honours the memory of two Canadian Armed Forces soldiers murdered on Canadian soil

10.20.2019

Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer has taken to social media to honor the anniversary and memory of two Canadian Armed Forces members who were murdered by terrorists in 2014.

Oct. 20 is the five-year anniversary of the death of 53-year-old Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who was deliberately run down while on duty in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. Two days later, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down while standing guard at the National War Memorial by Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who was later shot dead while storming the halls of Parliament.

Scheer wrote the following message in a Facebook post and on Twitter: “Five years ago this week, two Canadian heroes were murdered simply for wearing the uniform of the Canadian Armed Forces. This tragic anniversary reminds us that Canada is not immune to the threat of terrorism. We must stand vigilant and ensure that we continue the fight against threats to our security. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo.”

The attacks were both immediately deemed terrorism, something relatively uncommon in Canada, and Canadians rallied to give their condolences. The attack on Parliament Hill is still remembered on the anniversary each year to commemorate the deaths of the two Canadian Armed Forces members.

“Warrant Officer Vincent and Cpl. Cirillo both had very important jobs: to defend our rights and our freedoms as a people,” Governor General of Canada David Johnston said in 2015. “They stood up for our democratic values of tolerance, of diversity, of equality, of fairness and of the rule of law, by which I mean the constant, relentless pursuit of justice.

“This is who we are. Our Parliament is a symbol of who we are. It too was attacked last October.”

As of writing, the other federal party leaders have yet to commemorate the fallen soldiers on home soil.

Federal leaders marked the ninth anniversary Sunday of the Parliament Hill attack that left a Canadian reservist dead.

They also remembered the death of another Armed Forces member that occurred in a separate attack two days before the one in Ottawa.

"Nine years ago today, a terrorist attack at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill, in Ottawa, claimed one life and injured several others, inflicting a deep wound on our country, on all Canadians, and on the values we hold dear," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement.

A gunman killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, a member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, in 2014 while he was guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa. The gunman then entered Centre Block on Parliament Hill with a rifle before then sergeant-at-arms of the House of Commons, Kevin Vickers, and other officers stopped him.

RCMP Const. Curtis Barrett, who was cited in an Ontario Provincial Police investigation(opens in a new tab) for his role in stopping the gunman, later received the Star of Courage, which "recognizes acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril."

Trudeau's statement also mentioned Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, 53, who was killed two days earlier(opens in a new tab) in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., after a man struck him and another Armed Forces member with a car. Police later shot and killed the driver.

"We remember them as brave members of the Canadian Armed Forces who devoted themselves to their country, and we offer our deepest condolences to their families, loved ones, and colleagues," Trudeau said.

In a separate statement, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said, "Today, we remember these men who were killed in the line of duty, and we honour their memory."

"Additionally, as we reflect on the twisted motivation of the perpetrators, we recommit to upholding the very principles they sought to destroy – values of freedom and democracy," he said.

"Canadians will never allow these acts of hatred to undermine our country. We will continue to fight terror here at home and around the world so that all people can live in peace, security and freedom."

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said in a statement that his "thoughts are with the loved ones of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.

"We honour their memory and thank all those who put their safety at risk to protect others."
