Tom Murphy, founder of Edge4Vets, a service that pairs veterans with employers at airports, was at Edmonton International Airport on Tuesday, March 12, 2019. The organization has 15 locations in the U.S. and Edmonton will be the first Canadian location.

An American recruitment program aimed at pairing military veterans with employers in the aviation industry will make its Canadian debut at the Edmonton International Airport later this year.

Edge4Vets is based at Fordham University in New York City and operates in seven states. The program aims to help veterans transition into civilian life by illustrating what skills they can bring to different industries found in airports.

Tom Murphy, the program’s founder, said the skills veterans possess, such as leadership and dedication, make them essential candidates to work at airports.

“Airports are looking for quality talent as they seek to replenish their workforce of the future and there is nobody better than a veteran. However, what the veterans need is support to translate their strengths,” said Murphy at an employers’ workshop on Tuesday.

The program will launch on May 22 with a workshop for veterans. Edmonton is being used as a pilot project before Murphy hopes to expand to other areas of the country.

Troy Deatrich, an air force and military clerk veteran, attended the employers’ workshop. He said the program gives him hope as an unemployed vet looking for work.

“It sounds like it’s going to get veterans involved. It’s going to get them active in their career progression,” said Deatrich. “I think its got huge potential because it’s going to give us as veterans an idea of what’s available and how to tap into it.”

Deatrich said Edmonton is a perfect location for the pilot project being home to the largest army base in Western Canada and being three hours from the largest air force base in Canada.
