Blair Churchill is a Veteran from NB. Blair has started public advocating for Veterans today March 20, 2019

Blair Churchill Facebook post March 20, 2019

DAY 1 was a success. Lots of horn honking and the word is getting out. Three of us stood in unity for veterans today. I expect there will be more tomorrow. Free coffee, water and Timbits were provided by supporters and thank yous for doing this for those who dont have a voice. Exceptional support from the Base Commander who was going to send out a Base-wide email, announcing my intentions. The local RCMP also made its presence to ensure we were able to conduct the event without interference. No media today, but perhaps tomorrow. Not surprising not one person from VAC came out from behind their bulletproof glass to ask if there was something they could do to help us. Day 2 lies ahead.

Day 2
Vigil/Sit in/Watch/Protest/
Awareness

If you have veterans issues non personal that you want to be brought forward, use this post. I may need some assistance to get up to speed again. I am being health conscious as I proceed to hammer away.

Of note:

Wait times to process applications

40,000 waiting for disabilty benefits

the appearance they are doing something spending $150 miliion over 5 yrs on something when they already saved money on veterans and then the Department short changed veterans $165 million, they now spin it as giving us a gift that we should have recived in the first place.

Misinterpretation of policy and lack of common sense when applying it

Medical Review Board

Inconsistent services and information between offices and from CMs

Broken Promise of pre NVC lifetime pension

Blair Churchill March 21, 2019

DAY 2 was a bit disappointing but still a success. Hey at least I am not only one out here having my ass hang in the wind. Three of us out today and was joined in the afternoon by our first spouse, a lady. Nice to see. Lots of horn honking again today and the recognition now is immediate so I guess that is progress. Hoped we would have more people, but that did not materialize, and no media again despite calls made again to remind them a few of us are here anyway. Beginning to wonder if someone is behind that. No surprise again, not one person from VAC came out from behind their bulletproof glass to ask if there was something they could do to help us. Its been 34 days and no response from my MP Matt DeCourcey. I was promised feedback on my issue and was told they would get back in two weeks. I went in 16 days later they are in a meeting and will get back to me. !4 more days past and I went in and asked them if their phone was broke and proceeded to get a little excited. Again dont expect anything different from a Liberal MP drinking the Trudeau Kool Aid. Not sure where I will turn but keep protesting and wait for a microphone to get stuck in my face and that likely wont do any good either. It is calling for rain tomorrow. If it materializes we will pick it up Monday, if not back out again, even if it is just me still hammering away.
Laurie Manzer will have some pics and video once he gets membered in.

Did receive this feedback from an individual on our event:

Are you aware that the people who work at that office have no power to make the changes that you seek. They are coordinators of the rehab program. They can set up health care services, help direct clients to other resources, monitor progress. All this to help quality of life issues.
They have no power when related to financial benefits, decisions related to eligibility for financial entitlements, access to medication or weed. They don't set policy and have no power to deal with your issues.
That power all sits in Ottawa.
Because people refuse to understand the role of the local office, and then get frustrated when thier expectations are not met, staff are often abused verbally and physically. Local office can't keep qualified staff to even fill the limited role they have in the system. They are often afraid to go to work.
It's like punching the nurse for the way a hospital is managed.
I get that you are all angry but its important that it be directed at the policy and decision makers not the people who are busting their asses to work within a flawed system to do the best they can with no power to change it.

The individual giving the feedback must think we are all stupid.

The Locations for protest are picked as a symbol to Veterans Affairs Canada. A symbol that sits with the objectives of the sit-in/protest. A symbol that reflects the organization responsible for the benefits for disabled Veterans. Without this type of background the objectives become more confusing to the audience, and or general public. We know this, and that is why we pick settings such as these.

I give kudos to those Veterans standing out there trying to be heard. Advocating is all but gone or at least come to a standstill. These Veterans are encouraging others to join in with them. They are not pushing anyone, and they hold no egos. They are out there just trying to make a difference at the same time respecting all Veterans. This is how we can unite as a team. In fact it's really the only way to unite always leaving the door open for others to jump on board. I only hope after the election this form of advocating takes hold.

In the past we have seen some egotistical advocates who's objectives were taken off track by their own means with ego problems, and trying to push others in what they personally believe without listening to others. This is not the way to advocate for Veterans. If we are not united as a team, we will never succeed. We also see this in some Veteran sites where the admins/mods dictate to fellow Veterans what they can, and cannot say surrounding the Veterans file. Veteran members are being deleted simply because the mods of the site do not agree with what others are posting, or even the context of the post/article even though the poster did not write the article. This is not the way to treat fellow Veterans! Those in charge of such sites need to shake their heads, and think of the insults, the disrespect they are throwing at fellow Veterans. The harm they can cause to others by the way they choose to run their page. Nothing wrong with keeping the sites civil, respecting each other, but what I'm seeing on some pages is down right 100% dictatorship run. So I encourage Veterans to ignore such sites that are run in a dictatorship fashion. Let them continue to do what they believe to be the right thing, without you. Join a page that respects you for who you are, and allows you to respectfully write what you believe, you will be better off.

DAY 3

Well its a hair above 0 degrees, cloudy and waiting for the rain. I will venture out again until the rain hits, unless it beats me to it. Despite what we have done to get the word out, and the support we have had from onlookers its more bodies and media, thats all we lack and a strategy to encourage their participation. Still havent figured that out yet to keep this going. Like the lone wolf calling in the dead of night.

A little nippley today for sure. A bit more subdued response as I am solo today. Amusing responses from those driving F150s sucking on their cigarettes and swilling their Tims in a nice warm truck looking the other way in denial. No media why should I be surprised.

Update:
After waiting for 12 mins on hold with VAC (I am sure that some of you have waited longer) I finally got thru and have had my file pushed to an IRO. The guy actually expressed some common sense and compassion (rare to find these days when speaking of this organization, the guy should get a raise). I should receive a call tomorrow and I advised them of my present "community" activity. I will see where this goes as my health is starting to fail and I had better pull back the reins on my public protest. I will see where this leads. No media has returned my calls (4 calls to CBC, Global, CTV and The Gleaner local paper, since March 18th, and its been 39 days and no response from my Lib MP Matt DeCourcey. I have been muted on the Fredericton Daily News facebook page, they only post what is important to "all" Canadians I was told. I said I will pass the word to those that have served, the lack of "relevance" we have to society. Pretty sad when Base Gagetown is in the shadow of the capital of the province Fredericton. What can you expect when veterans are told in the public eye when a politician gets "demoted" to a Veterans Affairs portfolio.

UPDATE

I will be protesting tomorrow in front of Lib MP Matt DeCourcey's office 494 Queen Street, Fredericton. Timing TBA, depending on availability of anyone who wishes to join me. The local paper is gathering info from me and looks to be getting ready to run a story, we shall see!
