Robert Leeming, 34, appeared in court in Calgary, Canada, via videolink, accused of slaughtering the pair.

The bodies of Jasmine Lovett, 25, and her one-year-old daughter Aliyah Sanderson were found in woodlands west of the city in the western Canadian state of Alberta on Monday.

They were last seen alive in the Cranston area of the city on the evening of Tuesday, April 16.

Leeming made his court appearance on Tuesday, hours after he was seen being led into a Calgary police station in handcuffs.

The alleged British Army veteran, originally from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, is due to appear in court again on May 14, police said.

It added that investigations into how Jasmine and Aliyah died are continuing.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the pair's family said their lives had been "devastated" and their "hearts were heavy" following the news.

"We are trying to understand how this tragedy could have happened to our loved ones," they said.

Leeming is believed to have moved to Canada in 2013.
