Beaumont Hamel -- A Battle Remembered -- by Ed Coady -- Memorial University 1992

This particular retelling of the story of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in WWI focuses on three veterans then alive at the time: Abe Mullett (Pte. # 437 - a "Blue Puttee) from Wesleyville, B.B.; Ron Dunn (Pte. # 1088) from Bayley's Cove, B.B.; and Walter Tobin (Cpl. # 1556) of Roxbury, Massachusetts. All three survived the terrible battle of Beaumont Hamel. The latter two were both seriously wounded. Abe lived to be over 100.

The film was Produced, Directed and Written by Ed Coady while Fred Hollinshurst was the Executive Producer and Narrator. Technical advisers were Dr. Graham Skanes and the late Dr. David Parsons.

On July 1st, Newfoundlanders Remember

July 1st is Canada Day, however in Newfoundland and Labrador, we know it as Memorial Day.

On July 1st, 1916 (One-hundred and Five years ago.) the Battle of the Somme commenced. An entire generation of Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans, approximately eight-hundred men, went over the top of their trenches in support of the grander operation. The Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, scarcely remembered by those in the wider world, is regarded as one of the darkest events in the history of our Province, and before that: Our nation.

Within the span of less than 30 minutes, 710 fathers, sons, brothers, and cousins of Newfoundland and Labrador were cut down before the lines of the German Army. With a staggering 386 wounded, and 324 killed in action. Many having fallen to the guns of the enemy before reaching their own front line. Only 68 of the 800 soldiers were still in any condition to report for roll call the following morning.

The heroic actions of the soldiers of Newfoundland and Labrador have ensured both an eternal respect, and admiration from the citizens of our Province. Their noble sacrifice will forever be enshrined in our memories, for as long as Newfoundland and Labrador endures.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

Canada Remembers Beaumont Hamel

Jul 1, 2021

Today we remember the brave Newfoundlanders who fought and died in the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel.

While the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel is a solemn memory, it’s also a story of fearless determination that continues to unite us and instill a sense of pride.

Today, on the 105th anniversary, we ask:

Why do you remember the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel?
