There is controversy over a British Army recruiting drive that is aimed at enticing 16 and 17 year old youths to join the regular force.
The Guardian newspaper in the UK revealed the campaign, which began in January, was aimed specifically at young people from working-class backgrounds.
New figures obtained by the charity Child Soldiers International reveal that more than 19,041 16- and 17-year-olds applied to join the army after the launch of the campaign, a recent report in the Guardian noted.
The Ministry of Defence in the United Kingdom has pushed back against the criticism, saying the campaign is aimed at a broad range of individuals.
Britain’s use of so-called boy soldiers has been under fire for years now. More than one in 10 new Army recruits were boy soldiers of just 16 years old, according to the figures released by the Ministry of Defence in 2014. And more than one in four of all new Army recruits are under 18 – too young to be sent into combat, the UK newspaper, the Independent, reported in 2014.
