Local veterans not speaking out about
Ottawa protest

February 14, 2018

By Joseph Carin

BELLEVILLE – Local veterans and officials with the local Legions will not speak publicly about a protest fighting to improve compensation and benefits planned for Feb. 15 on Parliament Hill.

Yet, privately, they have a lot to say.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110 in Trenton and Belleville Royal Canadian Legion Branch 99 declined to comment on the subject when contacted by QNetNews. However, individual members of the Belleville branch have expressed concern for the quality of veteran services in the country but would not allow their names to be used.

“We don’t want to speak against the country we served,” said Trenton branch president Manny Raspberry.

Last December, the Liberal government launched a $3.5 billion overhaul of veteran benefits and reworked the compensation system which supports ex-soldiers. Currently, the government pays veterans $360,000 as the maximum lump sum, or a life long monthly pension of a maximum of $1,150.

One individual said in an interview held in the Legion Tuesday the compensation given is a monetary award system based off a case by case scenario often only giving larger amounts to more critical cases. Another individual talked about how the money being given by the government seems like a band-aid to the situation pointing towards the growing homeless veteran population.

According to Veteran Affairs there has been an increase of homeless veterans across the country. In January 2015 there were a total of 475 within the government radar eventually growing to 770 by September 2017.

Canada saw an increase of 295 homeless veterans from 2015 to 2017.
As of September, there are currently 770 homeless veterans under the government’s radar.

Veterans Affairs Minister Seamus O’Regan stated that not everyone will receive the same level of compensation. He also said the government is also committed to providing improved rehabilitative services to get able veterans back to work.

The rally is planned for 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Parliament Hill on Thursday.

NOW WE ARE GETTING OUR momentum

Shyte  or get off the POT!

Stand UP, you have been granted permission to speak loud and clear to the GOC.. (many veterans have concise voices that'll be heard).
Social Media and the News are telling the storey as it happens.
Social Media and accountability.....All three parties and the politicians who are within them, should all hold their heads down in shame.
Pro-Veteran is pro-Canada, period.
Help Canada First.
Indigenous people and the ones who keep the country secure from possible foreign evasions and whom train daily "and are on duty 24/7."
Oh, unless you are injured, you are on your own pleading to a three person panel called VRAB.. So, like it has been reiterated over and over again, keep everything well documented!

They'll throw anyone under the bus for their own benefit, as we can see and hear for ourselves?
Even our own. I know, It was done to me.
Mad
Take care of self and family and dealing with this grinding process called DND/VAC:D

iPolitics AM: Veterans, Tories
pressure PM to apologize for
‘insensitive’ comments

By Kady O'Malley

Published on Feb 15, 2018

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, seen here in a town hall meeting in Edmonton on Thursday, was jeered in B.C. on Friday.

Veterans call for apology

Veterans from across Canada are set to converge on Parliament Hill to pressure Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to apologize for suggesting, during a recent town hall discussion, that his government is continuing to battle some veterans’ groups in court because “they are asking for more than we are able to give right now.”

Those same “insensitive comments” by the prime minister are also set to take the spotlight in the House, courtesy of a Conservative-driven opposition motion that echoes the veterans’ call for an apology, and also challenges Trudeau to show them “the respect that they deserve” by keeping his campaign pledge to ensure that “no veteran will be forced to fight their own government for the support and compensation they have earned.”

Several Conservative MPs are also slated to speak at the planned rally, including lead critic Phil McColeman, Erin O’Toole, Cheryl Gallant, Todd Doherty and John Bressard.

That debate is expected to get underway shortly after 10 am, and will continue throughout the day.
