The Edmonton Sun

After the Prime Minister stated that veterans are asking for too much, many veterans felt they had to take a stand. In solidarity with Colin Saunders “left in the cold” protest in Ottawa, veterans, families and supporters in Edmonton and many other cities across Canada have joined together to be heard.

Military veterans rally outside the Alberta legislature building

Former master corporal Chance Burles stood outside the Alberta legislature building Thursday, talking with buddies as they warmed their hands against the -20 C chill with cups of coffee.

Leaning on a cane, a Canadian flag propped in his backpack, the Afghanistan veteran shrugged as he listed his physical ailments from years in the Armed Forces — a herniated disc in his back courtesy of his vehicle being blown up by an IED in 2008, knee and shoulder problems, hearing damage, tinnitus, post-traumatic stress.

“Lots of things,” he said with a chuckle.

Burles was among about 30 veterans who braved the February cold to take part in a local chapter of the national Left in the Cold rally, joining veterans from Victoria, B.C., to Newfoundland and Labrador at cenotaphs, city halls and legislatures across the country.

LACKLUSTRE SUPPORT

The gatherings were to demonstrate the raw deal veterans get when they return to Canada, Burles said — the court cases, the piles of paperwork from dealing with Veterans Affairs Canada, the lacklustre budget for supports.

“The thing we’re trying to get across today is that we’re still here,” Burles said.

“We’re still a voice. We may be beat up, we may be walking around with canes, we’ve got people here in wheelchairs, but we are one voice. We’re fighters, and we’re not going to let this go.”

Burles organized the Edmonton rally, and said he feels let down by a successive series of federal governments, from the Conservatives to the current Liberals.

PLAGUED WITH ISSUES

Veterans Affairs has been plagued with issues since its charter was overhauled in 2006, he said, leading to the sometimes “abhorrent” treatment of Canadian veterans.

Burles admits not every interaction with Veterans Affairs is horrible. His own was “pretty positive,” with helpful programs and the ability to get the medications he needs (although he does face challenges getting them in a timely manner).

Another concern — shared by veterans demonstrating Thursday across Canada — is the two-tier compensation of those who served prior to Afghanistan and those who served in Afghanistan.

“My two sons, if they grow up and join the military, I want them to be covered for any hardships they have to endure,” Burles said.

“I want it to be fair, so there’s no differentiation between people.”

IMO, our tune would be different, simply put "we believed our GoC was going to reinstate our Pensions Act."
If I was a Canadian peon, would I go out risking life and limb knowing they can promise you something and anything?

Canada is the beacon of peace, not lies and politics!

Falling apart at the seam (1.a line along which two pieces of fabric are sewn together in a garment or other article.)

The two peas in a pod (vacation buddies) plan isn't working out like planned.

Show boy and Selfie Boy are not baffling the brightest are they?

BTW my brother is the whatever rank of the day....
Haha, what a joke!

Word of advice, dominance according to rank works well in the Armed Forces, but we are all civilians now and we will not give respect, why?
Is there respect given back, NO!
No respect should be given at anytime now to any politician.
The GOC opened the P.A. Pandora's box and can not seal it shut, we now know we are in a legal system and not a Justice system.
We'll never have justice when we have fools at the helm.

Honourable is a name earned, not a pageantry name to be given to any Joe blow (unless your an Honourable politicians, which is oxymoronic).
Does it make sense to call someone Honourable, who isn't.
Liar, that's better.
It is plain and simple and also well earned as of today.

Unfortunately I have to postpone the FB Live
Q&A with VAC until week of March 12. The
2018 Budget is being tabled on February 27
and includes a communications blackout
February 24-March 9. As such, VAC will not be
able to participate. We will confirm the new
date shortly.
