Legion hosting another candlelight tribute to veterans

Posted October 21, 2018

The Royal Canadian Legion in Sarnia will host its 8th annual Candlelight Tribute on Saturday, Nov. 10 to remember to those who sacrifice to preserve our freedoms.

Candles purchased for a minimum $5 donation come with a label on which to write a tribute to a past or serving military member.

Participants gather at the Front Street entrance to City Hall at 7 p.m. and make their way to the nearby Legion Cenotaph, 286 Front St. N. There, following a brief service, they will place candles at the Cenotaph. For more, call 519-336-2841.

This year’s service will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War

So this 'thought' happened yesterday when I read about the Regina Legion crying poor....

If the Legion proudly states they are the "Official Veteran Advocates" then it's time for them to get their financial shit together! And not thru a f'n Go Fund Me page.

How can a veteran expect to get help from an organization that is in financial trouble? All the Legion wants is money. For the first time in my life I DO NOT TRUST THE ANNUAL POPPY FUND MONEY IS GOING TO GO TO VETERANS. Rather they are going to use it to pay their bills.

This organization is financially corrupt and they have access to our VAC file number because the GoC allows it. Money is the reason the Legion is basically up the sitting gov't's ass because they have no choice and the GoC loves it because 99.9% of the time they take VAC's side in all the problems with VAC.

How do I, a veteran, trust a Veteran Organization (?) where less then 40% of their membership are actual veterans? And their slogan is "Be a Cornerstone in Your Community"....where in the hell is helping veterans in that statement?

THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION IS NOT, I REPEAT NOT A VETERAN'S ADVOCATE ORGANIZATION. THEY ARE NOTHING MORE THEN A SOCIAL CLUB THAT RELY'S ON BAR SALES TO KEEP THEM FINANCIALLY AFLOAT.

We don't really know for fact how much of every dollar donated to the poppy fund goes towards disabled Veterans. We will never know because the Legion refuses to provide financial statements. Just like when they got caught sending members on exotic trips they refused to show statements. If they had nothing to hide they would have produced financial statements. So now we know they are guilty, and have lots to hide.

Do disabled Veterans need Legions in this Country? The answer is no.

Do disabled Veterans need support from Legions in obtaining benefits? The answer is no.

The Legion, and the bureaucrats within VAC are twins in terms of integrity, they both strive for they're own well being. And both are run by civilians.

Accountability to the public on where every penny given to the poppy fund goes should be legislated into law. It is the public's right to know on paper where their full donation is going.

I was very disappointed to view this video: https://www.facebook.com/VetsAdvocate/videos/1471157306321199/

This Idea of turning with the Legion is a big mistake in my opinion. How can we get support from an organization that works side-by-side with the government who has made things much worse for disabled Veterans post 2006 with the elimination of the pension act? We need to wake up people, and learn by past history, past mistakes.

With all respect the facebook video.....

1. This will be up to "their" generation of veterans. From Korea (until WW1&2 legion members accepted them) forward the Legions infamous vanity of "we were fighting soldiers not freeloaders" ridicule of us veterans who served Canada during the Cold War, Peacekeeping and NATO why would I join now?

2. This plan by the gentlemen in the video was more of a video about their plans for a coup of the Legion rather then change the direction of the Legion. Good luck with the civy Legion members that are going to fight you tooth and nail on your attempt of a coup to take away their Social Club and turn it back into what was meant to be...advocates for veterans!

3. The only way the Legion is going to change that will convince us veterans that faced the Legion ridicule on our time serving our country is to:
A) bite the bullet and close Legions on the verge of bankruptcy
B) release the stats on poppy funds (on a personal note i'd love to see the copyright papers they say they have on the poppy symbol)
C) remove your Service Officers that have access to our veteran files to show us you are on the veterans side not VAC's side
D) remove civilian's holding positions of authority that deal with VAC and replace them with veterans...NOW

FYI if you have an ANAVETS chapter in your town go to them instead of the Legion. They are just as educated as Legion Service Officers. Oh and ANAVETS has been around longer then the Legion.
