Parents of Canadian killed in parachute exercise ask for thorough investigation

OTTAWA—The remains of the Canadian soldier killed in a parachute-training exercise in Bulgaria returned to Canada Saturday, where his grieving parents asked for a thorough investigation to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.
Bombardier Patrick Labrie, a six-year veteran of the Canadian Forces originally from Buckingham, Que., and most recently based out of CFB Petawawa, died from injuries sustained Monday night while parachuting near the Bulgarian village of Cheshnegirovo.
Military police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Members of Labrie’s family travelled to Bulgaria to escort his body back to Ottawa, where they were greeted by Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, defence chief Gen. Jonathan Vance and members of Labrie’s unit, the 2nd Regiment of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.
Those on hand stood silently as Labrie’s flag-draped casket was slowly unloaded from the massive hold of a military plane, the setting sun casting the scene an orange hue, before a contingent of pallbearers carried his remains inside a hangar to the sad lament of a bagpiper.
Members of Labrie’s unit could be seen before the plane arrived consoling each other and wiping away tears as they waited for his remains to be unloaded before his parents spoke during a short, sombre ceremony about their son’s desire from an early age to join the military.
Yet father Jean Labrie and mother Julie Rivard, fighting back emotions, also spoke about the devastation of losing their son — and their fervent hope that a similar tragedy doesn’t befall anyone else.
“Our life has been torn apart. Patrick was a ray of sunshine in our life. He loved everyone and he was loved by everyone,” Rivard said, later adding: “We sincerely hope the investigation will be thorough in order to ensure this situation does not happen to another young soldier.”
Family members then placed flowers on Labrie’s casket before it was returned to the plane and flown to Toronto, where an autopsy will be conducted. Defence officials have not said when they expect the military-police investigation to be complete.
Labrie was one of about 100 Canadians participating in a U.S.-led training exercise in Bulgaria called Swift Response when he died. Officials have said he was conducting a low-level jump at night, and that he had jumped from a Canadian military plane and was using Canadian equipment.

PM skips ceremony for soldier killed during overseas training

Update: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan was not in attendance. In fact, he was. We regret the error.
The body of Canadian Armed Forces Bombardier Patrick Labrie, who was killed during a NATO exercise last week in Bulgaria, was returned to Ottawa on Saturday for a memorial service. However, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was not present to pay his respects.
Labrie was a non-commissioned member of the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery based at Petawawa, Ontario. He was sent to an airborne training mission in Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania called Exercise “Swift Response 19.”
Labrie died after something went wrong during a training jump from a low altitude Monday night.
According to CBC News, his body arrived at around 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Ottawa airport.
Soldiers hoisted Labrie’s casket, draped in a Canadian flag, onto their shoulders and carried it off the plane and into a hangar. Labrie’s family members held hands and walked behind.
Afterwards, Labrie’s parents spoke about their son, his father in French and his mother in English.
“When we heard about our son’s death … it was devastating. We can’t even describe it. Our life has been torn apart,” said Labrie’s mother, Julie Rivard.
“Patrick was a ray of sunshine in our life. He loved everyone, and he was loved by everyone.”
The Department of National Defence is investigating what lead to Labrie’s death. Three other soldiers, including two Americans, were injured in the U.S.-led exercise. However, Labrie was under Canadian command during his exercise.
Lt.-Gen. Jean-Marc Lanthier, commander of the Canadian Army, said in a statement that he was “deeply saddened” by the loss.
“Not only is his death a painful loss to his family and friends, but we feel this loss across the Canadian Army and throughout the entire military community,” he said.
We contacted the PMO for comments and mentioned that the PM’s schedule doesn’t specify what he was doing on Saturday. Currently, we are awaiting a response.

GATINEAU, QUE.—A military funeral will be held Saturday for a Canadian soldier killed in a parachute-training exercise in Bulgaria.
Bombardier Patrick Labrie, a six-year veteran of the Canadian Forces based out of CFB Petawawa, died from injuries sustained while parachuting near the Bulgarian village of Cheshnegirovo last month.
Military police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Labrie, originally from Buckingham, Que.
Roads will be shut Saturday morning in Buckingham as a military procession runs from a local legion branch to Saint-Gregoire-de-Nazianze parish.
The military said in a release Friday there will be a ceremonial gun salute, with 36 blank rounds fired by 12 soldiers “as a mark of respect for their brother in arms.”
It says the family has requested privacy, and Labrie’s funeral will not be open to the public or media.
Previously, his grieving parents asked for a thorough investigation to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.
“Our life has been torn apart. Patrick was a ray of sunshine in our life. He loved everyone and he was loved by everyone,” his mother, Julie Rivard, said in June.
“We sincerely hope the investigation will be thorough in order to ensure this situation does not happen to another young soldier.”
