Georgina resident turning milk bags in to mats for homeless vets

Getting their butts off the ground

One Georgina resident is working to get homeless veterans off the street — even if it’s only by a few inches.

Jen Leclair has been collecting milk bags from across York Region — namely in the Georgina area, Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury — to make milk bag mats as part of the Ontario Legion’s Operation Leave the Streets Behind, a program dedicated to helping homeless veterans get off the street.

“Many are sleeping on the ground,” said Leclair, who is also the administrative assistant for the program with the Ontario Legion command centre in Aurora.

“This, literally, helps get their butt off the cold ground.”

Each mat, which is about one- to two-inches thick, takes between 200 and 500 milk bags. And since the fall more than 30 mats have been made.

Earlier this fall, she put a shout-out on social media, and the community responded with bags, bags and more bags.

Leclair delivered a “station wagon” full of milk bags to be turned into a mats.

“It’s become a family affair,” said the mother of two. “Whenever we go out, I have to stop on the way to pick up more bags. It’s great so many people want to help.”

According to the latest Everyone Counts homeless survey conducted in 2018 by the federal government, about 4.4 per cent of Canada’s homeless population identified as veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces.

And about 83 per cent of homeless veterans are male, compared to about 63 per cent of the civilian homeless population.

The federal report is the second nationally co-ordinated point-in-time count of homelessness.

“You never know who is walking beside you,” Leclair said.

The mats are but one component of the 10-year provincial homelessness initiative. Homeless veterans are also given a comfort backpack with basic toiletries, such as warm socks, shampoo and feminine products.

The program also administers an apartment startup kit with gas cards or bus passes, new furniture and bedding, small appliances and other kitchenware, as well as assistance with first and last month rent.

“We’re trying to get their boots off the ground,” Leclair said. “This is a hand up to help get our guys back in civilian life.”

The number of homeless veterans is always increasing, she added.

Since the program started, the program has helped close to 840 vets get off the streets, of which 88 were female veterans.

The issue is widespread all across Ontario, with vets being helped in about 165 communities big and small, Leclair said.

And there’s no one clear solution, she added.

“The numbers grow quickly,” she said. “And there’s no one solution. We just can’t let our guys fall through the cracks. It’s our duty to take care of them. They gave their time and service.”

For more information, if you know of any homeless veterans who could use help, or to drop off milk bags, contact info@on.legion.ca. Clean milk bags can also be dropped off at any local legion across Ontario.
