Public invited to LAV III monument unveiling in Cobourg

Oct 4. 2019

Site construction has begun on the new Light Armoured Vehicle III (LAV) Monument on D’Arcy Street which will be unveiled to the public on Nov. 8 at 3:30 p.m. - Town of Cobourg photo

COBOURG — Site preparations have begun for the light-armoured vehicle (LAV) monument that will be on permanent display at 700 D’Arcy St. soon.

The Town of Cobourg is inviting citizens to attend a formal unveiling, which will be held on Nov. 8 at 3:30 p.m.

Once the site of the No. 26 Ordnance Depot of the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps from 1954-1970 (Canadian Forces Station Cobourg), the LAV III monument program was established to commemorate Canada’s mission in Afghanistan and is being administered by Canada Company.

Successful communities receive full-size decommissioned replica LAV III vehicles provided by the Government of Canada to be used as centrepieces for local monuments

The LAV IIIs are the iconic vehicles used during Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.

In 2018, the town was awarded the monument and will be one of 30 or so communities across Canada to install a monument commemorating fallen military members and their families.

“The LAV III Monument is a symbol of support for the Canadian Armed Forces and all the sacrifices our men and women have made for our country,” said Cobourg Mayor John Henderson. “I would like to officially welcome all citizens to attend our unveiling event as we reveal the permanent home of one of these national monuments.”

Cobourg’s monument will include a large, relocated plaque with the original coat of arms of the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps badge.

The No. 26 Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps was commanded by Maj. Angus Read, who later became mayor of the Town of Cobourg in 1985.

Leading up to the unveiling, the town said it would like to recognize and thank all those sponsors who have contributed to the project.

They include Behan Construction, Blake Construction, Castleridge Concrete, Chadwick’s Towing and Repair Inc., CIMA +, Cressman Tree Maintenance and Landscaping Inc., Ex-ll Welding, Finlay Construction, Just In Time Sanitation, Kelly’s Excavating and Utilities, Lakeland Multi-Trade, Mayhew Graphics, New Amherst Homes, Northam Industrial Park, Proelectric, Randy and Solveig Barber, Rent All Centre Cobourg and Todd Cane.

The town is seeking additional donations from the community.

Visit cobourg.ca/en/town-hall/lav-iii-monument.aspx for more information on the LAV III Monument program.
