Hubbards veteran shouldn't be waiting for bed at Camp Hill, resident says

A resident of Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Hospital says he fully supports a Second World War veteran’s fight to be admitted to the long-term care facility for Canadian war veterans.

“He shouldn’t have to wait and anyone who contributed to the war effort, whether the navy or army or any of the services, has a right to come here,” said Curtis Grandy, a 85-year-old war veteran from Newfoundland.

But 91-year-old Gordon Smith, who’s dealing with several medical issues, still has no idea whether he’ll even get on a waiting list for one of the 29 empty beds at the Halifax facility.

News last week that the Hubbards resident had been denied access to the facility because he completed his service in Britain was met with widespread outrage. The backlash prompted Veterans Affairs to open up 25 of the vacant beds for Allied veterans, such as Smith, and modern-day veterans. The other four will continue to be reserved for Second World War and Korean War veterans who served with the Canadian Forces.

Smith, a Canadian citizen for last five decades, had applied to Veterans Affairs for access to the facility back in May. He and his family have been fighting for the department to overturn its decision since August.

But it remains unclear when those new beds will be filled and how that process will unfold. Veterans Affairs spokesman Alex Wellstead said Friday it’s up to the province to decide who gets access to the newly opened beds. He said all long-term care beds in Nova Scotia fall within the purview of the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness.

Meanwhile Nova Scotia Health Authority spokeswoman Kristen Lipscombe sidestepped the question, saying in an email that Veterans Affairs manages criteria for admission to Camp Hill.

Neither would say how many veterans are on the waiting list for the beds or whether Smith is on the list.

Smith said he underwent a nurse assessment on Tuesday, which he says will determine whether he meets the criteria for access to the facility. He underwent the same assessment, measuring his cognitive and physical capacities, this past August.

He said he was told by the nurse that the assessment had been ordered by Veterans Affairs.

“Perhaps I’m not one of the lucky ones but there are 25 other people who will be lucky,” said Smith.

“I am a little bit frustrated but I was very optimistic about the announcement last week because it means that 25 veterans could move into Camp Hill who otherwise thought they wouldn’t or they’d be on a long wait list.”

Grandy says someone needs to step up soon and do the right thing.

“It’s clear to me that World War Two veterans from England should be treated like Canadians,” said Grandy. “They served the Commonwealth like the rest of us. I consider Gordon Smith a comrade and he should be in here with the rest of us.”
