When a flood threatens an Ontario community or a snowstorm hammers a city, skills learned in London just may help save the day.

Canadian military gathered at Wolseley Barracks over the weekend for an exercise in disaster relief, crafting the skills that aid the military in dealing with a domestic crisis, said Andrew McLaughlin, public service officer with 31 Canadian Brigade Group.

The 31 Canadian Brigade Group, headquartered in London but with soldiers and reservists across Southwestern Ontario, set up a mobile communication centre at Wolseley Barracks Saturday and Sunday.

“We want mobile forces to respond to an emergency domestically across Canada, mainly in Ontario,” he said. “We want to make sure our soldiers practise skills necessary to communicate and move, in an emergency response.”

The parking lot at the barracks on Oxford Street saw a mobile command centre set up over the weekend and about 50 soldiers in the brigade group worked on a communications strategy for a possible crisis.

Called a simulated emergency response exercise, it would see soldiers respond to a crisis, such as when soldiers were sent to Newfoundland this winter to help them dig out from a snowstorm.

“We recently, in April 2019, deployed more than 100 soldiers in the Ottawa Valley area for major flooding. We were one of the first on the ground,” McLaughlin said.

“We saved a great deal of property. We ensure our soldiers are there to reinforce the local community and make sure people are safe.”

The weekend exercise in London was called Trillium Dragon 20, and the simulated emergency was a flood the military had to respond to, practising communication and moving soldiers to the flooded areas.

“We are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice, we’re drawn from across Southwestern Ontario and ready to work toward some form of response,” said Lt. Col. Peter St. Denis.

“The problem we have been given today is to deal with flooding anywhere in the province or nationally. . . . If we look at the data it’s not a case of if, but when.”
