The remains of a cement footing and rusting steel piling of a Bailey bridge over the River Orme at Caen, Normandy, France. The bridge was built by the unit of the author’s father. Scratched into one of the four surfaces of the footing is the name M.R. Chabman (Serial #C30344), RCE (Royal Canadian Engineers), Ottawa. The unit also rebuilt a damaged airport near Caen.
