Yellow vest protests spread to Canada, criticizing illegal immigration, taxes

CTVNews.ca Staff
Published Sunday, December 16, 2018

Originally starting in France, yellow vest protests have moved to Canada. Many were held Saturday across the country criticizing the tax and immigration policies of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government.

The protests against French President Emmanuel Macron’s government, which began as a criticism of fuel taxes have entered their fifth week. Over 66,000 people decided to defy the government’s orders to suspend protests this past weekend. At least eight people have been killed since riots began in that country.

Similar demonstrations have taken place in Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom in the last several weeks.

They made their way to Canada on Saturday, with protests and counter-protests hitting cities including Saskatoon, Toronto, Moncton, N.B., Calgary, Halifax and Edmonton.

Protests spurred on by carbon taxes, pipelines
In the Maritimes, a small local group of demonstrators gathered in front of Halifax’s City Hall criticizing a laundry list of issues including Trudeau’s carbon tax.

“I have never met even one Canadian that understands how a carbon tax is going to reduce carbon emissions,” protester James Hoskins told CTV Atlantic. Another demonstrator, Barry Ahern, criticized Trudeau’s summer grant program which he called “oppression of Canadians by our own people.”

In Calgary, a large rally began outside the downtown Kerby Centre, with protester Craig Chandler telling CTV Calgary that people were upset over pipelines and Trudeau’s leadership in general.

“Ever since France has been doing it, everybody wants to do it, “ said Chandler, a member of the Progressive Group for Independent Business, who also called out Calgary Centre MP Kent Hehr.

“We want to know from our MP why he’s done nothing on the pipeline problem, why he’s done nothing on oil and gas when he represents oil and gas,” Chandler said. “We want to know why Quebec is getting $13 billion in transfer payments when we’re hurting.”

Hehr acknowledged the difficulties in the city but stressed his government’s commitment to some pipeline construction — including the Trans Mountain expansion.

“There is no doubt that we want to ensure that when Alberta does well, Canada does well,” he said.

Grievances included taxes, immigration
Meanwhile, in Toronto, a group of about 60 protesters, gathered in Nathan Philips Square to voice frustration about the status quo.

While carbon taxes and immigration were the focus of protests in North Bay, Ont., where a counter-protest took place in the town’s multicultural centre.

In Edmonton, there was tension between the yellow vest demonstrators and counter-protesters with hundreds gathering at the Alberta Legislature. Many had shown up to criticize the province’s high taxes and voice concern over the future of the province’s energy industry.

“I’m tired of Trudeau basically doing what he wants with our money and sending it overseas,” Turk, a yellow-vested protestor, told CTV Edmonton. “Right now, personally, I’m facing a job crisis. All our oil jobs are gone, all our money is going south.”

In many cities, last week’s signing of the UN’s Global Compact for Migration in Morocco is what drove their anger. Canada was among the 164 nations that signed on. The United States was not.

Despite demonstrators’ claims that the pact will open Canada’s borders in never-before-seen ways, it is not legally binding and Canada has not agreed to changing its immigration laws in accordance with it.

Counter-protesters say demonstrations had racial aspects
Yellow vest protesters in several cities were met with opposition with many denouncing the protests.

In Halifax, social activist and counter-protester Rana Zaman argued some people were only upset with a particular type of migration,

“Somehow immigration automatically too many equals Muslims,” she said.

“People are drowning in poverty, we are not taking care of our veterans, our seniors are not being respected, they are dying in hallways,” she said. “Our healthcare is suffering, people are waiting years and years for surgery. That’s what I want to fight for.”

In Edmonton, yellow vest protesters went to Winston Churchill Square and came face to face with a small group of counter-protesters. Those critical of yellow vest movements called them anti-globalist and said there were elements of racism involved.

“I am here to fight racism and to fight hatred that is being put up by this group,” said Edmonton counter-protester Adebaya Quinitiiti. “That anger they have is going to tear them apart. Things can be talked through without hatred, without racism.”

Multiple protesters in Edmonton were arrested after several scuffles between the two groups.

I hope the Yellow Vest movement in Canada grows big from coast to coast. This would be an excellent opportunity for Veterans to join in, and have our voices heard.

Yellow Vests sending a message to the feds. Will they hear it?

Estevan Mercury
DECEMBER 22, 2018

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Estevan has hosted a couple of Yellow Vest Movement protests and a truck convoy recently.

After all, a central tenant of the Yellow Vest Movement in Western Canada focuses on their opposition to the carbon tax. The carbon tax, of course, will have serious consequences on the local economy, and the economy of Saskatchewan, once it is officially force-fed on Saskatchewan by the federal Liberal government.

The oil and gas sector, the mining industry and the agriculture sector all stand to lose once the carbon tax is imposed on this province.

And you aren’t going to make many enemies in southeast Saskatchewan, or in Saskatchewan as a whole, if you’re voicing opposition to a carbon tax.

The carbon tax isn’t the only issue for the Yellow Vest Movement. They are also opposed to illegal immigration, although it should be noted that the organizers of the local protests have said they have no problem with those who come to Canada legally.

It’s important to make that distinction, because those who oppose immigration as a whole are really lacking in redeeming qualities.

The Yellow Vest Movement in Western Canada s also voicing support for Canada’s veterans, an opinion that isn’t likely to be met by much opposition.

The first protest in Estevan on Dec. 15 was very well attended, with more than 50 people in front of city hall in a peaceful protest. These people weren’t belligerent or shouting crude slogans. They stood in front of city hall, carried their signs and chatted among themselves.

The loudest noise came from the supportive motorists who honked their horns as they drove past.

So you had to expect there would be an encore, and there was one on Dec. 22. This time more people gathered in front of city hall, and there were more signs. A couple of people carried Canadian flags.

There were a couple of crude signs, but nothing that would be classified as illegal or even embarrassing.

But this time there was also a truck convoy, and it’s unlikely that anyone who witnessed the convoy will forget it, regardless of whether they agree with the message of the participants.

A total of 427 trucks, most of them semi-trailer units, rolled through the streets of the city. People lined Fourth Street and King Street to see the trucks drive by. Many people showed their support by honking horns or cheering.

After all, it’s not every day you see 427 semi trucks drive by.

If you’re wondering how long it takes for 427 trucks to rumble past, it took nearly an hour for the semis to drive past city hall. Reputedly, there were trucks still at the starting point, the Bert Baxter Transport yard northeast of the city, while other trucks were nearing the end of the route.

Yes, they were driving illegally through downtown Estevan, rather than using the city’s truck route two blocks to the north. And they were loud with their incessant blaring of horns, which likely didn’t make some residents too happy.

But is anyone actually going to be complaining? The drivers involved with the truck convoy were going to bat for Estevan, for Saskatchewan, for our industries, for our economy and for our competitiveness. Most local people will give them a pass for the inconvenience they caused travellers during the first full day of Christmas vacation, or for the imposition they caused last-minute Christmas shoppers.

We’re not sure whether the Estevan Police Service received any noise complaints for all of the truck horns.

The people who organized the Yellow Vest and truck convoy rallies deserve a lot of credit for their efforts, even if you don't agree with them. We hope they'll keep fighting.

Unfortunately for the Yellow Vest Movement, their participation is unlikely to change anything. They’ll send their message to Ottawa on the carbon tax, illegal immigration and treatment of veterans, but the federal government will continue with its current policies.

If you get thousands of people to turn out to Yellow Vest rallies in metro Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver, then the Liberals might heed the message a little more closely.

But the government likely isn’t going to pay attention when the protests are taking place in communities and constituencies where they have little hope of winning in the next federal election.

Medicine Hat hosts first yellow-vest rally of 2019

By Taylor Chartrand > January 5, 2019

Protest YV6

Medicine Hat, AB - Roughly 110 residents of Medicine Hat turned out to the yellow-vest protest today outside of the old Montanas location.

Protesters looked to carry their momentum over from 2018, as they wanted to send a peaceful message to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Government.

One thing that has become confusing over the last little bit, is what are the protesters actually rallying for?

One of the four yellow-vest organizers, Tamara Lich explains.

"We want Bill C-69 stopped," said Lich. "We want C-48 stopped. There's a lot of concern over Bill C-71 and the signing of the UN Migration Pact as well. The yellow-vest movement is not anti-immigration. We want legal immigration. That's it."

Lich then explained she doesn't know when these protests will end.

"I hope to see this going until we see some changes at our top levels, the federal level. That's the most important thing."

Another important thing when it comes to these protests is public safety.

"I spoke with a constable from the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) yesterday. He said their concern is the safety of the public and I assured him we as protesters were on the same page."

Lich furthered her comments by saying protesters are not trying to be disruptive.

"We're not coming out here to cause disruption or violence. We simply want to be seen, we want to be heard and we want to support all Canadians and Albertans."

If things were to get out of hand, Lich said they had the full-support of the MHPS.

"The constable said if we ever feel unsafe or threatened, they will happily come and be here for us."

In regards to the yellow-vest protest, Lich said she wasn't sure what the next step was.

"There was a petition being advertised today by one lady, but we as organizers haven't been circulating anything at the rallies. Like I said, we're trying to keep this very positive and keep it moving forward. We don't want any negative connotations with what we're doing."

That 'one lady' was Crystal Graham.

"I wanted to give information about the Canadian Peoples Union (CPU), Freedom 2017," explained Graham. "It's about Canadians taking back their rights because our government isn't hearing what our yellow-vest's have to say."

Graham feels the Liberal Government has turned their backs on Canadians and this is the next feasible step.

"They need 51% of Canadians to sign the form. They are going to go to court and speak on all of our behalf. They can be found at www.freedom2017.com and there's a form there just to sign your name."

If the petition garners enough Canadian signatures, that is when Graham said the action will begin.

"This would be so our rights could be heard in court. This will kind of put everything in a stand still, so that maybe a proper investigation could be ran. People need to know 'where is our money going?' 'What is really going on with our oil and gas industry'."

Graham then stated that Alberta needs help.

"These people are going to fight for us. They're going to be fighting for everything that we as protesters stand by."

If you would like to educate yourself on the petition, Graham said she isn't going to push it upon you.

"I'm going to leave that up to the people to decide. Go to the website and read more about it. You'll see all the benefits that could come out of this and why we need to stand up for ourselves."

And just like Lich, Graham said the yellow-vest movement has many issues with the Liberal Government. Picking one to tie to this rally would be difficult.

"At one point it was all about the oil and gas sector and then it just snowballed out of control. The next thing you know, we're having conversations around veterans and immigration. It's just all starting to snowball and people are slowly starting to realize we as Canadians are not being heard."

Graham said she knows what her next step will be.

"I did send a very nice and professional letter to the Prime Minister. It's been months since that letter and I haven't heard anything. Now, my next step is this petition and to get signatures from those willing."

The next yellow-vest protest in Medicine Hat is slated for Saturday, January 12th from 12-2 p.m between Safeway and Superstore on Carry Drive.

Man arrested after alleged assault at yellow-vest protest in Hamilton

Protest Image

The Canadian Press
Published Saturday, January 26, 2019

HAMILTON -- Police say they arrested a man during a yellow-vest protest in Hamilton, Ont., on Saturday morning.

Hamilton police say the group was protesting the federal Liberal government in front of city hall around 11 a.m. when an opposing group showed up.

Police say a verbal exchange occurred, followed by an assault. A 25-year-old man was arrested, but it's not known which side the protest he was on.

Police say the man has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon and causing a disturbance.

The yellow-vest movement has sprung up in Canada after the symbol was used in France to protest fuel tax hikes last November.

Yellow vests have turned up at events across Canada displaying widely varying agendas, but most are opposed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's leadership.
