Last week I took my grandson out to lunch for his birthday.

As a kind of preparation for Remembrance Day, I took him to a British restaurant where they serve the same breakfast they served the aircrews of Bomber Command when they returned from a mission – eggs, bacon, bangers, stewed tomatoes, beans, mushrooms, toast and coffee.

My dad and his crew missed their Bomber Command breakfast on Sept. 1, 1943, and Dad was not to have a decent meal for two-and-a-half years. For four members of his aircrew, as well as for 55,759 others killed in action, the life they’d experienced, and ever would experience, was forever taken away.

Ten thousand of those airmen who did not come home were Canadians, and several thousand were taken as prisoners of war.

My dad got lucky. When he was captured, angry townspeople tried to lynch him, but at the last moment were stopped by the Luftwaffe. Others were not so lucky.

On his 21st birthday, Dad was rousted from his bunk and joined one of the infamous Death Marches, 70 miles through a blizzard, as the Russians came west.

Over 44,500 Canadians paid the ultimate price during the Second World War, a price that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apparently sees as negligible. While President Donald Trump met with some Vietnam veterans at Da Nang and expressed his gratitude for their sacrifice, Trudeau seemed to think he was on holiday and never mentioned that over a hundred Canadians had died in Vietnam. He probably didn’t even know.

I saw that many were offended at his not being in Canada on Remembrance Day. I’ve been thinking about that, but perhaps it’s for the best... he doesn’t belong at anything to do with the military. It’s fair to say that perhaps he learned from his father that taking up arms in the service of one’s country is an option, not a duty.

Justin Trudeau has no respect for veterans. While he was giving $10.4 million to a terrorist traitor who killed an American, the number of homeless Canadian veterans has risen by 62 per cent since 2015.

There’s an almost comic haze enveloping the Trudeau’s office from the very first. Like Barack Obama, Trudeau really wasn’t qualified for the job and, like Obama, he seemed to loathe the country and culture he was elected to protect.

Right after Trudeau was elected, I saw something that seemed like a joke. Sophie Trudeau had gathered dignitaries and sang them a lullaby on Martin Luther King Day. I shrugged that off, as at the same time, our First Lady was cackling that “white people are the problem.”

Part of Trudeau’s persona is childish. My two-year-old grandson Drewie was pleased to show me his Halloween costume, and if he’s got a cool pair of socks, he’ll show them when asked. And when he wants to attract attention, he’ll pick up a Nerf gun and make his Tony Montana face. But even Drewie knows when it’s cool to do stuff like that and when it’s not. It’s called decorum. When a two-year-old American toddler gets it, and the 45-year-old Prime Minister of Canada doesn’t, then something is seriously wrong.

Trudeau seems to despise Canadian culture, while denying it exists at all... the legacy of heroes from the Boer War, the two world wars, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan are what helped build the Canada he seems so eager to give away.

These soldiers died for God and Country.

But then again, Trudeau’s Governor General thinks that’s dumb.
