WE BROKE THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR LARGEST HUMAN MAPLE LEAF!

June 25, 2019

On June 29, 2019, we kicked off Canada Day weekend by hosting Operation: Stand Proud to honour our Canadian Armed Forces in a really BIG WAY!

Leon’s Trenton, along with its Partners, held an Official Guinness World Record Attempt and broke the record for Largest Human Maple Leaf as a show of appreciation for the men, women, and families, who have dedicated their lives to serving our country.

The event raised over $22,000 for the Canadian Armed Forces charity, Soldier On, which inspires recovery and rehabilitation for former and serving military members through the transformative power of sport.

Stand Proud raises $22,000 for Soldier On

JULY 18, 2019

A world record set in Quinte West has not only raised awareness of Canada’s military it has raised thousands of dollars for an organization that helps injured members of that military.

Mike Eden, owner of Leon’s Trenton, announced Thursday that, to date, Operation Stand Proud, the event that set a world record for the largest human maple leaf, has raised $22,024 for Soldier On.

Soldier On is a Canadian Armed Forces program committed to supporting veterans and serving members to adapt and overcome permanent physical or mental injuries through sport.

Eden was joined at the Leon’s Trenton store by various business partners for the event, including representatives of Starboard Communications, as well as MP Neil Ellis, Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison and several members of city council.

Eden said he has been overwhelmed by the response and support in the community and across the country.

“When we invented the idea we felt strong it was going to be successful,” he said. “But the real surprise was how much interest the whole country of Canada took. It went national.

“It’s just so cool to see the rest of Canada and Canadians also standing proud for our military. It makes us all feel a lot better that the work we did translated into awareness and dollars.”

Eden noted that television stations, radio stations and newspapers across the country carried the story of Operation Stand Proud, in which 3,942 people created a human maple leaf at Centennial Park in Trenton.

Eden noted that it was also an internet sensation with thousands of shares and likes from the event.

He said the impetus behind the idea was to raise awareness of Canada’s military and everything they and their families do every day for this country.

“From the very beginning the question was, ‘How can we shine a light on these sacrifices?” he said. “We know how we feel, and we think others feel the same way, but how are we going to do this?

“What’s cool is the community and the country jumped on board and got involved and made it all happen.”

Eden noted the dollars would continue as his team continued to sell merchandise related to Operation Stand Proud with the proceeds going to Soldier On.

“The dollar part of it is going to continue,” he stressed. “We are just not sure how we are going to move forward with this but we can say Operation Stand Proud will never stop trying to raise money and awareness for the cause.”

Robert Gagnon, a 20-year veteran of the Canadian forces who was medically released from the military in April, competed in the Warrior Games at the end of last month.

He and his family – wife, Jennifer and sons Felix, 7, and Samuel, 6 -- were at the event representing Soldier On, noting he wouldn’t be competing, or possibly doing anything, if it wasn’t for that organization and they help they provided.

“I can go head to toe and the only thing I haven’t broken is my left hand,” he said. “And there’s stuff beside the physical – the things that say in that back of your mind -- that just doesn’t go away.

“And these guys,” he said, pointing to his family, “suffered too. So thank you.”

The city of Quinte West will be creating a monument at the park to commemorate the event.

Mayor Jim Harrison said he and the entire city council were proud of what Eden and his team had accomplished.

He said he had been talking to a member of the military earlier in the day, and had mentioned that he had never had to pack his bags and move like Armed Forces personnel do.

“He said, ‘We pack our bags so you don’t have to,’” Harrison said.

Canadian Armed Forces program helps injured members and veterans

By Slav Kornik . Global News
Posted July 15, 2022

A contingent of Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans are in Edmonton preparing for an international sporting event aimed at changing their lives.

Thirty-seven members of the CAF’s “Soldier On” program are participating in a five-day training camp for the Warrior Games.

Members of the program will compete in eleven events ranging from sitting volleyball to rowing.

“It’s a big world stage. It’s not just single. You talk to everyone about the Warrior Games. So just being a participant, soaking it in, talking to other people, seeing where they are in their journey of healing,” Soldier On member Sabrina Mulford said.

The games and the Solider On program are about more than current and retired military members competing in sport. The primary goal is to help participants recover from injury and illness.

“It affords an opportunity for these brave women and men who’ve been injured during their careers to put the maple leaf on their shoulders again, to serve Canada and be part of that team that might have been lost after their injury or illness,” Soldier On senior manager Joe Kiraly said.

“Warrior Games has given me that light at the end of the tunnel because the last year has been really really difficult,” Mulford said.

Mulford had to adjust to life outside of the Canadian Armed Forces. She was a military member for 24 years before retiring last year.

“For me, the military is a little different. We’re a different society, and we try to mingle back in, and that’s hard when you spent 24 years in the military coming back into civilian life again,” she said.

“To come to a program like Soldier On and experience shared bonds among folks who have been down similar roads in their lives, see how they’ve coped and share strategies, it’s a really powerful experience, and it can have life-changing results,” Kiraly said.

Mulford has already experienced the benefits of the program. She will be competing in rowing and power-lifting at the Warrior Games.

“I kind of lavish in the experience of meeting new people from different parts of the world and the country because we all live different lives, [but] we all have a common goal when it comes to the Warrior Games.”
The games will take place at the ESPN Wild World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, August 19 to 28.

Canadian veterans get the NHL experience with Ottawa Senators alumni through Soldier On program

Published Jan. 24, 2023

Canadian veterans are getting the NHL experience through the Soldier On program, as they take on Ottawa Senators alumni at the Canadian Tire Centre Wednesday.

Bruno Mathieu is participating in the event for a second time.

"We had a chance to come here for a hockey camp with the Ottawa Senators and their alumni," said Mathieu.

He served for 28 years, but had to retire when he got sick.

"It was a big family to me and to my family also, and suddenly we're left you know. I had to get kicked out because of cancer," said Mathieu.

He suffers from PTSD and his service dog helps him through tough times.

The Soldier On event is a three-day program that allows veterans to watch the Sens practice, participate in a meet-and-greet lunch with current players, and it culminates in a hockey game against the Sens alumni.

"It's just an amazing opportunity. And it’s sure to reignite the passion for sport and an active lifestyle to help these women and men along their roads to recovery," said Joe Kiraly, Soldier On Acting National Manager.

The Soldier On Sens program started in 2017 but had to take a two year hiatus due to COVID-19. This is its first year back and the veterans and alumni couldn't be more excited.

"It's great for the alumni to interact with them, you know, to be able to kind of give back. And really for us it's a thank you for everything that they've done, and do for us," said former Ottawa Senator Chris Phillips.

Sens defenceman Nick Holden was part of Tuesday’s meet-and-greet lunch.

"For us to be able to give up a little bit of our time today to come and talk with them and hear some of their stories and hear their excitement for the game of hockey, which is something that we love, is pretty cool," said Holden.

"The biggest things that I'm seeing so far is just the investment from the alumni. The coaches that we had yesterday, guys like Chris Neil and Darren Rumble, having them sit in the room with you, getting dressed and talking afterwards, talking about experiences. Everybody said amazing things so far. It's been really good," said Lt.-Col. Dave Wood.

"We had a practice yesterday, it was really good and we had a lot of fun, you know, and we're sore this morning," said Mathieu.

After Monday's practice, 17 veterans are set to take to the ice Wednesday against the Sens alumni as they continue on their road to recovery through sport and recreation.
