Bernier says People's Party set up in all 338 ridings ahead of 2019 election

OTTAWA - The People's Party of Canada says it has reached its goal of setting up 338 riding associations as it sets its sights on being a competitive force in the upcoming federal election.

In an email to supporters, leader Maxime Bernier says the move amounts to a "gift of hope" for Canadians seeking to bring back freedom, responsibility, fairness and respect to the country.

Bernier was a Conservative MP for more than a decade before he announced in August he was leaving the fold to launch his own party.

The party's platform is still being finalized, but its website says positions taken by Bernier in the Conservative leadership race -- such as a pitch to phase out supply management for the dairy sector -- will form the basis for its policies.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer defeated Bernier for the federal Tory leadership by a slim margin in May 2017.

Bernier has accused the Tories of abandoning conservatives, adding the party has "nothing of substance" to offer Canadians seeking a political alternative.

A retired veteran from Brandon has put his name forward to run as candidate for the People’s Party of Canada in Brandon-Souris.

Rob Lussier, who was posted to CFB Shilo 15 years ago before eventually retiring, said he made the decision to run because Canada is in dire need of new leadership.

"What we do is we get upset with the Liberals so we vote in the Conservatives," Lussier said. "Then we get mad at the Conservatives and we vote in the Liberals. It’s the same thing back and forth."

People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier has a different philosophy, Lussier said, adding that they should be focusing on helping Canadians before assisting other people in different countries.

"We’re spending far too much money on the prime minister’s pet projects around the world, yet we have vets that can’t afford medication, we have seniors in poverty and mothers missing meals because they want to feed their kids," Lussier said.

"We’ve got to fix that stuff here in Canada first and get our own people out of poverty and doing well for themselves, and then look after the rest of the planet once we have."

Lussier is the only one running to be a candidate for the People’s Party in Brandon-Souris, Frank Godon, vice-president of the party’s Brandon-Souris electoral association, said on Sunday.

They did originally have two people running — himself and Lussier — but because Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa didn’t have anyone, Godon moved over there.

"If you have two people and you have a neighbouring riding that doesn’t have a candidate — nobody’s stepped forward — it’s common sense to have one person go over to the next one," Godon said.

"It’s good business, you know, when you’re doing something like that."

Lussier has spent time living all across Canada, including Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, often hopping from place to place because of his job.

He has always had an interest in politics, he said, often following federal politics closely, never getting too involved with city or provincial politics as he normally only stayed in one place for three to five years.

The party platform is being rolled out right now.

They should put more emphasis on how the provinces are managing their health care instead of federal, as each province has unique health-care needs, Lussier said. And, make sure that people who do have firearms aer responsible for them and have the right rules and regulations in place, "without interfering on their rights to own a firearm and be a responsible firearm owner."

Lussier brings many years of leadership experience to the table, he said, after spending a total of 32 years in the Forces.
