Bell Helicopter Textron Canada will start the process to upgrade and extend the operating life of the Canadian Forces Griffon helicopter fleet with initial work needed to determine how to proceed with technology improvements
The firm, based in Mirabel, Que., will be conducting design work needed to extend the life of fleet of 85 CH-146 Griffon helicopters to at least 2031.
The definition work, valued at up to $90 million, will be performed under the existing support contract for the CH-146, which was awarded to the firm in 2011, according to the Department of National Defence. The company, which is the original manufacturer of the helicopter, will develop design changes to upgrade the aircraft’s avionics systems, engines, and cockpit displays, as well as to integrate sensor systems.
The Griffon Limited Life Extension project is estimated to be valued at approximately $800 million, the DND noted.
Once the definition phase is complete, a separate contract is expected to be awarded in 2022 for implementation of the upgrades.
Canada’s fleet of CH-146 Griffons entered service between 1995 and 1997. The helicopters are used for a variety of functions, including special forces support, tactical troop transport, reconnaissance, escort and surveillance, casualty evacuation, disaster relief, and search and rescue.
The CH-146 can carry up to 15 people (two pilots, a flight engineer, and 12 passengers), has a maximum gross weight of nearly 5,400 kilograms, and can reach speeds up to 260 kilometres per hour, according to the Canadian Forces.

Canada to upgrade RCAF CH-146 Griffon helicopter fleet
The Government of Canada is set to upgrade the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) fleet of 85 CH-146 Griffon helicopters.
Following the refurbishment, the lifespan of the aircraft is expected to last until at least 2031.
Bell Helicopter Textron Canada, the original equipment manufacturer, has secured a contract worth up to $90m to perform design and development work for upgrading the helicopter’s avionics systems, engines, cockpit displays and integrated sensor systems.
The company will carry out the work under the existing CH-146 support contract it received in 2011.
The government has outlined a budget of approximately $800m for the Griffon limited life extension project.
Griffon is a multi-purpose utility helicopter deployed by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in their operations both at home and abroad.
“Extending the life of the CH-146 Griffon fleet will ensure the longevity of the RCAF’s tactical helicopter capability.”
The helicopter can be used to support multiple missions, including tactical troop transport, reconnaissance, evacuation, disaster relief, special operations aviation support, and search and rescue.
RCAF commander lieutenant-general AL Meinzinger said: “Extending the life of the CH-146 Griffon fleet will ensure the longevity of the RCAF’s tactical helicopter capability.
“These helicopters have performed extremely well over the years and with these new upgrades, they will continue to be a valuable asset that will allow our personnel to carry out missions and operations successfully well into the future.”
The CH-146, which is based on the Bell 412 helicopter, has been in use with the Canadian Armes Forces since the 1990s.
The helicopter is capable of transporting up to 15 people, including two pilots, a flight engineer, and 12 passengers, and can fly at top speeds of up to 260kmph.
Upon completion of the definition phase, the government is expected to award a separate contract for implementation in 2022.

In a funding announcement that took place at CFB Borden in January, the Government of Canada announced approximately $800 million to modernize a fleet of CH-146 Griffon helicopters.
As outlined in Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, the investments will go towards extending the life of the equipment ensuring that the women and men of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) have the functional equipment necessary to carry out the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) missions.
“Through our defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, we are providing the women and men of our Canadian Armed Forces with the equipment they need to do the important work we ask them,” Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence commented. “A tactical transport helicopter capability is absolutely critical to the success of the full range of military operations. With these upgrades, we are ensuring that our military can continue to rely on this proven helicopter for years to come.”
Phase one of this life extension is the definition phase, during this phase the original equipment manufacturer, Bell Helicopter Textron Canada Ltd., will develop changes to design in order to upgrade the helicopter’s cockpit displays, integrated sensory systems, engines and avionics systems.
The Griffon helicopter, is essential to CAF operations fulfilling number of functions including escort and surveillance, reconnaissance, tactical troop transport, casualty evacuation, disaster relief, special operation aviation support and search and rescue.
