CAMBRIDGE — Friends of a 56-year-old man gunned down at a Cambridge housing complex say they're stunned by his slaying and are hoping his killer will be brought to justice.
Kurt McKechnie was shot multiple times early Thursday morning at a Region of Waterloo subsidized housing complex on Southwood Drive.
Police haven't made any arrests in the killing. People who knew McKechnie say they've been rattled by the crime and want answers.
"We're all flipping out about this. It's very upsetting," said Pete Jones, a friend who used to do contracting work with McKechnie.
"I'm still in shock over it. Everybody is. Kurt was just the nicest guy, he wouldn't even harm a fly."
McKechnie, a military veteran who served overseas for the Canadian Forces, had a reputation as a gentle guy who would go out of his way to help his friends, he said — whether it was helping to build a deck or move patio stones.
"He was a hell of a good guy," Jones said. "He was a very generous man. If you needed help with something, he'd be the first one to jump out of his seat."
McKechnie reportedly suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and had a prescription for medicinal marijuana.
He drew a military pension, and one theory is that he was shot in a botched robbery. Other neighbours speculated it was a targeted killing.
McKechnie didn't have children of his own, but helped raised his former partner's kids. A tall man with a social personality, McKechnie liked to have beers in the backyard with friends and had a hearty laugh.
Waterloo Regional Police say an autopsy Friday confirmed that McKechnie died from gunshot wounds. They were called to the Surrey Gardens complex at around 6:25 a.m. Thursday.
"Upon arrival, police located a male suffering from serious injuries. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased," police said, in a statement.
Investigators were looking into a surveillance video showing people leaving the townhouse complex shortly after multiple witnesses reported hearing gunshots.
Caution tape blocked off a number of homes in the complex as forensic identification officers appeared to be examining tire prints in a parking lot. Officers were also seen going door-to-door in the 68-home complex.
