Canada's Veterans Ombudsman June 21. 2021
On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate and recognize the diverse cultures, unique heritage, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people.
Help us honour Indigenous Veterans who have made an impact for their fellow Veterans, like Capt (Ret’d) Robert Thibeau. In 2020 we presented Robert with a Veterans Ombudsman Commendation for Lifetime Contribution.
Robert is a Métis Veteran and a committed volunteer within the Veterans community. He is the founding member and President of the Aboriginal Veterans Autochtones, an organization dedicated to advocacy, community service and remembrance.
Watch Robert’s Commendation video here:

More than 125,000 Canadian peacekeepers have served with courage and compassion over the past seven decades. Peacekeepers restore peace and security to areas devastated by conflict. Today, on National Peacekeepers’ Day, we express our gratitude to those who serve and have served in this vital role around the world.

On August 15, 1945 the Second World War came to an end. For more than six years, over one million Canadians, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians served in uniform around the globe. Over 45,000 of these individuals lost their lives and another 55,000 were wounded.
Today, we reflect on the tragedy of this global conflict and its legacy.

Centre of Excellence on PTSD
Families provide the first line of support for Canadian Armed Forces members, as well as former military and RCMP members living with post-traumatic stress.
As a family member, you may not have witnessed the traumatizing event(s) that your loved one lived through, but you can often experience the consequences. It may be challenging to provide support for your loved one with post-traumatic stress. You may feel isolated, exhausted, and stressed in your own right and need your own supports and resources.
As you support a Veteran in your life, we are here to support #you.
We are excited to announce the launch of our online resource dedicated to providing information, tips, and resources specifically for Veteran Families. Learn about PTSD, its impact on families, and find tips for dealing with everyday triggers and more difficult symptoms:

BGen (Ret’d) Sheila Hellstrom, who became Canada’s first female General, was a true trailblazer. Her promotion to the rank of General in 1987 was a watershed moment for women in the CAF. We mourn her passing and remember her contributions. And although we may not have known her personally, her leadership and incredible dedication to a life of service to her nation continue to be an inspiration to us all. Our condolences to those who knew and loved her. She passed away on December 7, 2020, and celebrations of her life will soon be held in Ottawa, ON (September 23, 2021) and Lunenburg, NS (October 16, 2021).

This Gender Equality Week, we celebrate the progress that has been made, even as we acknowledge the work still needed to achieve gender equality in Canada and around the world. In our pursuit of fairness, the OVO recognizes all genders and the unique experience of the people we serve.

Canada's Veterans Ombudsman Sept 22, 2021
On Sept 22, Veterans Ombud Nishika Jardine and Deputy Veterans Ombud Sharon Squire were honoured to participate in the Aboriginal Veterans Autochtones Ceremony of Remembrance at the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument. Together, they laid a wreath in tribute to the courage, spirit, and achievements of Indigenous Veterans who have served with distinction in all branches and ranks of the military, overseas and at home, in war and in peace, and who continue to serve today.
