New Royal Canadian Navy support ship now in the water, sea trials planned

Davie Shipbuilding announced on Monday that Asterix, the new supply ship being leased to the Royal Canadian Navy, has now been launched.

Commissioning of all onboard systems on the Resolve-class naval support ship began in early September and on Nov. 16, the ship will perform its sea-trials prior to achieving full operational capability, the firm noted.

During the sea-trials – overseen by Lloyd’s Register – the ship’s safety, quality, systems and functionality will be tested against the military standards and specifications which it has been built to, Davie added.

Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Regina, accompanied by Naval Replenishment Unit Asterix, left its homeport of Esquimalt Wednesday for a deployment to the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. The ships will initially support Operation PROJECTION working with other navies to enhance military cooperation and partnerships in support of Canada’s diplomatic efforts in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the Royal Canadian Navy.

In March 2019, the ships will transition to Operations ARTEMIS, supporting the Canadian-led Combined Task Force 150 or CTF 150. CTF 150 is part of a naval coalition of 33 nations that promotes security and stability in international waters of the Middle East regions, according to the RCN. The task force tries to deter the smuggling of weapons, illicit cargo, and narcotics, among other duties.

HMCS Regina‘s mission represents Canada’s third deployment to the Asia-Pacific region under Operation PROJECTION, according to the RCN. HMCS Calgary was in the region from August to December 2018.
