Veteran Hugh Patterson returning to Normandy

Hugh Patterson will once again be returning to Normandy for the anniversary of D-Day.
His last trip was in 2014, for the 70th anniversary. He had been invited by Canada’s Veterans Affairs to go.
“I went in the early ‘70s for the first time. Well, I guess that would be the second time for me,” he said.
Before he enlisted, Patterson had worked in a factory as part of the war effort.
When he decided to sign up, his parents didn’t stop him, “but they didn’t encourage me.”
He said he was strongly influenced to sign up after hearing King George’s speech, calling on Britain’s allies to come to the nation’s aid.
“I was a royalist,” he said.
Patterson’s basic training was in Orillia in the summer of 1942, and his advanced training was in Kingston that fall. Right before Christmas, he shipped out.
Patterson was a dispatch rider with the 2nd Canadian division H.Q. signals.
“It was … exciting,” he said.
At full strength, there were 24 dispatch riders in his division. At least twice a day, sometimes more often, they would drive motorcycles or jeeps to the front lines, delivering messages.
“We weren’t always up to strength,” Patterson said.
It was dangerous work; many of his comrades in arms were injured or killed in the line of duty.
When asked what he remembers strongly about his time in service, Patterson said, “the noise and confusion.”
It had been that way from when he first arrived. While at the East India docks in London, waiting to sail to France, he said “Bombs were dropping right by our ship.”
Patterson was 22 years old on June 6, 1944, when he and 24,000 other troops landed on Normandy’s shores.
When it was suggested that was quite young, he answered with a shrug, “There were a lot younger than me.”
On June 1, Patterson will once again head back to Europe. Theresa Campbell, one of his nine children, will once again be joining him.
She said the last time they went to Europe, “The citizens there were shaking his hand, telling him ‘Merci, thank you for your service.’ They were very kind.
“He’s never forgotten all the people, the soldiers, he worked with,” she said. “He definitely goes back out of respect for the soldiers who died there.”

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in northern France. Their goal: to liberate Western Europe from Nazi tyranny. From a distance, it might seem that victory was pre-ordained, but no one felt that way at the time. British military historian Peter Caddick-Adams tells the incredible story of what happened on that monumental day.

Boissevain Veteran’s Uniform Donated To Juno Beach Museum

Frank Godon with his father's uniform that is being donated to the Juno Beach Museum in France
Frank Godon of Boissevain is heading to France this weekend for a special ceremony at the Juno Beach Museum to mark the 75th anniversary of D-DAY.
He’ll be part of the Canadian delegation attending the event and he’ll be taking his father’s uniform along to present to the museum for permanent display.
“My father before he passed in January of this year promised his uniform to the Juno Beach Centre Museum and about a month and a half ago Veterans Affairs Canada called me and said I would be part of the Canadian delegate.”
For Godon it will be a special trip because it will mark the first time he has travelled to Juno Beach without his father. Hid dad Francis passed away this year at the age of 94.
“My dad Francis Godon was with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and on D-DAY he was one of the first wave to hit the beach. At the end of the day there was only 23 men and an officer left from his company. He was with “b’ Company with the Winnipeg Rifles. Two days later, while they were taking their objective of taking out a railway bridge at Puteaux he was captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war.”
Godon recalls his father didn’t talk much about the war but did start opening up back in 2003 after they went back for the opening of the Juno Beach Centre. “In 2009 they opened up the Metis part of the pavilion at the museum to honour the men who were at D-DAY and I think that’s why my dad wanted to give his uniform the museum so it wouldn’t get lost and it would be on permanent display so people would remember the war and the sacrifices made by so many.”
He says the D-DAY ceremonies will be a mixture of sadness and happiness and he looks forward to the trip and the program.
“When dad got back from the war the 50’s and 60’s were troubled times for him. He has severe PTSD that wasn’t diagnosed or treated and he was in self-destruct mode and it wasn’t until the mid 1960’s when he turned his life around. He gave up alcohol and started working and he worked with his brother Irvin for many years.”
Godon was the recipient of numerous medals including the France Star, the Germany Star, the Volunteer medal and in 1995 from France he received the D-DAY medal.
Frank Godon leaves Saturday June 1st for Ottawa where he will meet up with the rest of the Canadian delegation before heading to France on Sunday.
