Minister of Veterans Affairs Seamus O’Regan and Deputy Minister Walt Natynczyk have been travelling across Canada holding town halls with Veterans to explain the new Pension For Life plan. Unfortunately, Veterans are not getting the answers they are seeking and the lack of detail and clarity in the plan has only led to more anger and frustration and misinformation being shared in the Veteran community.
The government was presented recommendations after nearly two years of work brought forward by the Ministerial Advisory Groups, in which the Legion participated, that provided the information, research and solutions to improve supports and lifelong financial security for Veterans and their families. Yet to this day, two months after the Pension for Life plan was announced, we still do not have crucial questions answered about how this plan will work, how it will impact ill and injured Veterans, and whether it will meet the needs of Veterans and their families.
Rather than Town Halls with no new information, we urge the government to focus its energy on flushing out the details of the Pension for Life plan to provide a full and complete picture of how this plan will affect all Veterans. An effective, coordinated communication approach must then be implemented to ensure the Veteran community and all involved in supporting Veterans and their families understand how it affects them.
