Ontario revamps outdoors card, licences

By Expositor Staff -December 5, 2018
ONTARIO—The provincial government has launched a new way for hunters and anglers across the province to get their Outdoors Cards and hunting and fishing licencing products.
“Our government is making life easier and allowing you to get outdoors quicker,” said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. “We have launched a new licencing service that makes it easier to buy hunting and fishing licences. It was designed with hunters and anglers in mind.”
The new licencing service is easy to use with new mobile features and a single Outdoors Card. Gone are the days of needing a licence plus an Outdoors Card.
It can be accessed online at huntandfishontario.com, at participating ServiceOntario locations or at one of over 700 licence issuers across the province. Use it now to purchase Outdoors Cards, fishing licences and small game licences.
“We’ve improved our service so you can get out on the lake or into the woods in less time by purchasing licences from the comfort of home,” said Minister Yakabuski. “Interacting with your government should be seamless, and we’ve replaced the old service with one that serves everyone in the province.”
For more information on the new fish and wildlife licencing service, please visit Ontario.ca/OutdoorsCard.
The province also recently announced its plan to honour past and present members of the Canadian Armed Forces by amending fishing regulations so veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members can enjoy free recreational fishing by early 2019.

Ontario Provides Free Recreational Fishing for Veterans

TORONTO — The Ontario Government has delivered on its promise and is giving back to those men and women who have sacrificed so much.
As of January 1, 2019, all veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members residing in Ontario can enjoy recreational fishing across the province without having to purchase a fishing licence.
“Our government is working to show appreciation for veterans and Canadian Armed Forces members, helping make it easier and more affordable to enjoy recreational fishing,” said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry.
Recreational fishing is a $2.2 billion industry in Ontario and an important tradition in the lives of many. With this regulatory change, all Canadian Armed Forces members – retired or still serving – can maximize their time on the water, and ice, by fishing all year round at no cost.
“Today, and everyday, we should salute the sacrifice and bravery of our service members who have defended and continue to defend the rights and freedoms we enjoy,” said Minister Yakabuski. “By allowing veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members to fish for free in Ontario’s beautiful waters and encourage more time outdoors, we are offering a token of recognition to these heroes who deserve our respect and gratitude. Thank you for your service.”
Ontario’s Government for the People continues to take steps to show Ontario’s appreciation for veterans, Canadian Armed Forces and their families.
For more information, call the Natural Resources Information and Support Centre at 1-800-667-1940 .
Ontario is supporting veterans, Canadian Armed Forces members and their families. We are:
- Consulting on a new hotline for military families moving to the province
- Ensuring Legion halls occupied by Ontario branches of the Royal Canadian Legion are exempt from paying property tax
- Planning to build a memorial that honours heroes of the war in Afghanistan on the grounds of the Ontario Legislature

Re: Complimentary for Veterans
I would love to have either a fishing license or a free bus ride in Alberta. Kudos to ON and SK for their initiative in this area.
I have written to the Province but I was politely rebuffed. Too bad. Alberta was once home to a large number of military personnel. Now, numbers are quite diminished.
