Free veteran parking in Clarington

Jennifer O'Meara
Clarington This Week
Monday, November 1, 2021

Just in time for Remembrance Day, veterans will be able to park for free in Clarington — again.

Councillor Margaret Zwart championed the change, explained that in 2006 veterans had free parking in Clarington. When the parking bylaw was updated in 2014, the veteran’s exemption was accidentally left out.

“This was brought to my attention by a local veteran’s family who see this as a sign of respect to veterans by allowing them to park for free at meters downtown,” said Coun. Zwart.

The Ministry of Transportation, working with the Royal Canadian Legion, issues an Ontario Veterans' Licence Plate (featuring a poppy) to those who:

• Served in the Canadian Armed Forces, including Reserve Forces, the forces of the Commonwealth, or its wartime allies.

• Served in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during wartime.

• Served in NATO operations or as a member of United Nations peacekeeping force as a member of a Canadian police service.

• Served in the Vietnam War in the forces of the United States or its allies during this war and who was a Canadian citizen at the time of such service.

• Served as members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (currently or retired).

• Is a currently serving members of the Canadian Forces, including Reserve Forces.

From: Parks Canada

News release
December 18, 2023 Gatineau, QC Parks Canada

The Government of Canada acknowledges and respects the extraordinary contributions and sacrifices made by Canadian Veterans, active Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, and their families.

Today, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, and the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, announced that Parks Canada will be providing free daily admission to active CAF members, Veterans of the CAF, and their immediate families.

Spending time in nature is beneficial to one’s health and exploring cultural sites and stories can provide opportunities to spend quality time alone or with families and friends. Parks Canada administered national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas provide excellent opportunities for Canadians to get outside, relieve stress, and connect with loved ones. By providing free daily admission, Parks Canada is supporting the health and wellness of CAF members, Veterans of the CAF, and their immediate family members.

Effective January 1, 2024, CAF members, Veterans of the CAF, and their immediate families will receive free daily admission to all Parks Canada administered locations by presenting their CF One Platinum card, which is administered through Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS). CF One Platinum cards are exclusively issued to currently serving members and Veterans of the CAF and their immediate families. Veterans can also present their Veteran’s Service Card which is available to any former member of the Canadian Armed Forces who completed basic training and has been honourably released.
