We need to listen to the voices of our older patients, Opinion, Dec. 27

I am a registered nurse who makes house calls to frail, elderly people. Many of my clients are Second World War veterans who are on the VIP program provided by Veteran’s Affairs Canada.

I think this program should be expanded to include all Canadians over the age of 85 (or even 80). It supports people in their own homes with many services, including house/garden work and snow shovelling, as well as taxis to doctors’ appointments and extended health benefits like dental and foot care. And, more importantly, a counsellor to co-ordinate the services.

In the long run, it keeps people independent and out of the hospital or long-term care, which also saves the government money. Makes sense to me.
