Lawrence MacAulay - June 6, 2019
Today, on Juno Beach, I joined Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in remembering the brave Canadians who landed here 75 years ago.
The stories that we heard today from so many Veterans speak to the enduring impact of their actions – thank you. #DDay75

The Cross of Sacrifice in the Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery honours the memory of those who laid down their lives 75 years ago.
It was an honour to stand beside the family of Sergeant John Albert Collis for his interment ceremony in this beautiful place.

It’s hard to imagine that 75 years ago, 20 young Canadians were executed in the days following the D-Day Landings – right here in the Abbaye d’Ardenne.
The sacrifice of those young men will not be forgotten.

”No day will ever erase you from the memory of time.”
The Canadian Garden in Caen is a fitting tribute to those who served and the young Canadians who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom and security.

As our tour in France comes to a close, it’s fitting to end it this way – with a parade to honour the Veterans who were with us this past week.
Thank you all for your stories, your friendship, and your service.

Canada appreciates the courage and honours the sacrifice of all Métis veterans.
That's why today Metis National Council Vice President David Chartrand and I signed a contribution agreement for $30 million to help recognize Métis veterans.

Ok explain this one I served 20 plus years as an Algonquin 1st nation I always thought regardless of your ethnic background a veteran is a veteran not trying to stir the pot just don’t know what the 30 million is for and where is it to be used hope I do not offend anyone that’s not my intentions

Apparently this is about discrimination and fraud perpetrated against the country's Indigenous war veterans from the Second World War and the Korea conflict.
Apparently the bureaucrats fought hard against Metis Veterans for compensation.
Many former soldiers who fought for their country overseas were given access to loans and grants to establish farms.
Métis ex-soldiers who applied for that money faced indifference, "discrimination" and "racial answers from young bureaucrats at Veterans Affairs" and were told to "go back to their traplines," said Chartrand, who interviewed a number of survivors.
"So a lot of them, of course, never went back again after their treatment."
$30 million
The Liberal government pledged the money in last week's federal budget to recognize and "commemorate" the contributions of Métis veterans to Canada in the Second World War.
Those veterans have long been denied the same recognition as non-Indigenous and First Nations veterans, and the money is expected to be used to set up a trust fund to benefit the survivors and their descendants.
They tracked this guy down in the UK.
“The Second World War should never be forgotten.”
A powerful message from 98 year old Paul Delorme, a Second World War Métis veteran.

"A tree for every hero."
Highway of Heroes is planting 2 million trees along Canada's Highway of Heroes: one for every Canadian who has served our country.
Happy to join Justin Trudeau today to announce $2.9M in support of this incredible initiative.

Corproal Nick Kerr served in Afghanistan, has made a huge contribution to Highway of Heroes and works with veterans as they transition out of the military.
It was a privilege to present him with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation.
Thank you, Nick, for all you do.

Today, we mark National Indigenous Peoples Day - a day to recognize and honour the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada.
To the 12,000 Indigenous People who have served our country bravely: thank you.
