Graeme Shaw knows what transitioning RCMP members need, because a very short time ago, he was one.
Shaw, Veterans Affairs Canada’s new RCMP Liaison, is ready to use his real-life experience to support and improve the transition process.
“This kind of work takes a toll on people. It can be a difficult adjustment,” the 33-year RCMP Veteran says.

Former RCMP member Laurie White was shot in the leg while on duty and had her leg amputated below the knee.
After ten months of intense physical therapy, she returned to full-time duties.
She is thought to be the only police officer in Canada to return to full active duty with an artificial leg.
She has told her powerful story in a book, 10-33: An Officer Down Steps Back Up.
“I wrote my memoir for many reasons: to offer hope, decrease judgment, and show that we are not alone, there are resources available, and we owe it to ourselves and our families to advocate for what we need,” says White.

There is a community that understands what it’s like to live with an operational stress injury (OSI).
If you’re a current or former RCMP member having difficulties with the daily life as a result of your service, the Support for Operational Stress Injury (SOSI) program will help you connect to a community of people who have experienced similar situations.

When Corp. (Ret) Paul Woods began his uniformed RCMP career on northern general duty detachment in Alberta in 1974, he was immediately impacted by traumatic situations.
He waited 35 years to get the help he needed, and carried the pain of PTSD his entire career. He wishes the help that exists today had been available to him back then. That’s why assisting other officers and their families deal with trauma and other impacts of duty became a passion for him.
“There are too many of us in the hurt locker,” he says.
He now works as a Peer Support Volunteer and Mentor in the RCMP Support for Operational Stress Injuries (SOSI) program, the related Veterans program in Ottawa, and with Operational Stress Injuries and Social Support (OSISS).
