This Women’s History Month, we celebrate women’s outstanding achievements throughout Canadian history.
Meet Gee, Master Warrant Officer (Retd) Guylaine Lamoureux.

Meet Second Lieutenant (Retd) Nathalie Chafe-Yuan.
‘’As a female in combat arms, I often felt alone, powerless, and under constant pressure to prove myself. I sincerely hope that my story resonates with others so that they feel comforted, empowered and encouraged to find their own voices as well as their own path to healing.’’

Meet Retired Naval Officer and Former RCMP member Gerry White.
He says what he witnessed when he served with the UN in Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge killed 1.5 million citizens, still haunts him.
‘’Those things carve themselves into your brain- it goes in and won’t go away.’’
Despite his difficult and dangerous mission to help restore peace and order, White says he found some solace in helping ease the suffering of the local children.

Meet Veteran Jeff Becker.
His desire to serve led him to the Canadian Armed Forces, where he spent 15 years as a Combat Engineer.
In 2018, he found spiritual support by giving back and helping communities recover from disaster as a ‘’Greyshirt’’ with Team Rubicon.
‘’It provides opportunities to help people at home in a very humanitarian context. What I get out of this is the soul of helping, without asking for anything in return.’’

Have you ever thought of yourself as a Veteran?
Last month, we shared the story of Lieutenant (Retired) Emilie Létourneau, who struggled for a long time to self-identify as a Veteran: https://ow.ly/9f3950QjO6e
To help address the common misconception, here’s who VAC considers to be a Veteran:

“I was the invisible yet visible minority.”
As the only woman of colour in her battalion, Sgt Retd Joan Buchanan says she spent many hours feeling excluded, alone and ignored.
She made it her mission during her 27 year career to help break down racial barriers for future generations of people of colour in uniform.

David Blackburn’s career in the CAF started with a summer training program in the Reserve.
After graduating top of his class and joining the CAF, he rose through ranks and served in the Gulf War, Bosnia and Winnipeg. He was released from service in 2011 due to repeated injuries.
His experience with leadership and human resources landed him four management positions since. He currently works with Prospect Human Services helping people, including fellow Veterans, find jobs.
Blackburn encourages Veterans and current CAF members to focus on the people they work with and learn transferable skills like leadership.
“Don’t be afraid to take chances and have confidence in your abilities.”
