Poppies, Politicians and Pawns
Jun 5, 2018
As a non-partisan organization focused on helping Veterans, their families and their communities, The Royal Canadian Legion does not get involved in elections or platforms. Recent opinion columns, media reports and politicking have prompted us to say “enough is enough” – it is deplorable to see Veterans being used as political pawns at election time.
From pledging tax freedom to Legion Branches in Ontario, to calling into question the validity or strong symbolism of the poppy through uncommonly held personal opinions, we find the conversation abhorrent.
The red poppy, and remembrance events in general honour the men and women who have paid dearly for the freedoms we enjoy today – including the freedom of speech and the freedom to personal opinions.
We distribute 20 million poppies and send close to 17 million dollars back into our communities yearly thanks to generous Canadians who choose to wear this symbol and donate to the National Poppy Campaign. They want to support our Veterans and help the Legion advocate for the issues that really matter, such as more research into the use of medical marijuana for Veterans, and clear, immediate standards for tools and approaches – like the use of service dogs - that will help some of them recover.
We must stop playing games of political football with our Veterans, and start talking about the issues that will make a difference in their lives.

Legion wants more detail on regulations for Veterans
Jun 20, 2018
The Royal Canadian Legion recently noted planned changes to regulations under the Veterans Well-being Act. We understand that overall, they will provide recognition, income support and stability for Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans experiencing a service-related illness. This appears to be a positive move.
Unfortunately, there’s something missing: details. The Legion is not in a position to tell the Veterans we serve, what the changes are exactly. We cannot give Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) a true assessment and whether the changes will truly benefit Veterans and their families. Why? We have not seen a draft of the regulations. This is very concerning, as we are well positioned to provide important advice.
A similar lack of detail exists in the wake of the Pension for Life plan announced last year. The sample scenarios presented to date by VAC focus on Veterans who are eligible to receive the highest amount of support. While we had heard of a formula and calculator to help individual Veterans determine eligibility, no such tool has been shared. Veterans deserve better and more timely information.
To be blunt, we find VAC policies to be extremely complex, despite our repeated advice to provide simple, clear communication so Veterans can understand the impact of any changes on their lives. While we had hoped that streamlining benefits would make life easier for them, we are hearing about increased confusion and anxiety.
The Legion is hopeful VAC will provide us – and others – with the new draft regulations as soon as possible so that we can help ensure any new benefits actually result in a positive outcome for Veterans.

Now this is what the Legion needs to concentrate their money and efforts on!
I believe this project is because of the tragic brain injury and rehab that Trevor Greene went thru. I read about it about 5 years ago.
