Former RCMP member Laurie White is very open about her mental health journey.

While on duty, Laurie was shot and had her leg amputated. During her recovery and return to full-time duties, she struggled with intermittent depression and PTSD.

Today Laurie encourages everyone to look after their mental health. “The key is to develop self-awareness and develop individual strategies to avoid dark places,” she says.

RCMP members now included in veteran license plate eligibility

Published May 9, 2022

RCMP members who have served at least three years of active duty can now apply for veteran specialty license plates with Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI).

“SGI takes pride in recognizing the work and sacrifices of Canadians who have served in uniform.” Minister Responsible for SGI, Don Morgan, said in a release. “We are honoured to include those who have served our country in the RCMP as veterans, and thank them for their dedication to community safety.”

Veteran license plates were introduced in 2004 and are available to those who served in the Canadian Armed Forces, as NATO or UN Peacekeepers or served during World War II or the Korean War as a member of the Canadian Forces, Allied Forces in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command and now: RCMP members.

People who are eligible for veteran license plates after serving with the RCMP or in military service of Canada can apply for a plate by submitting an application and relevant documents to the Royal Canadian Legion, SGI outlined in the release.

If the application is approved a veteran plate will be sent in the mail.

SGI said the customer will then need to visit or call their motor license issuer to have the plate associated with their vehicle.

Memorial service held for RCMP Const. Heidi Stevenson, killed in N.S. mass shooting

Published June 29, 2022

HALIFAX - An RCMP officer who was among 22 people killed in the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting was remembered today during a regimental service in Halifax that recalled her brave actions.
People lined a street leading to the service for Const. Heidi Stevenson, watching as Mounties and municipal police marched, bagpipers and drummers played, and a hearse brought the officer's urn to the ceremony at the Cole Harbour hockey arena.

COVID-19 restrictions had delayed the official ceremony, though a family funeral took place five days after Stevenson was killed.

RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki told today's service that Stevenson would be remembered for "her courage and strength of character."

She said the force will remember her "heroism that day and the bravery she demonstrated and the actions she took to protect the community she cared so deeply about."

A public inquiry into the mass shooting has indicated that the veteran officer was racing to support an injured colleague on April 19, 2020, when the fatal encounter occurred on a highway interchange about 60 kilometres north of Halifax.

The 48-year-old officer died in a gunfight with the killer, who had jumped a lane of traffic in his replica police vehicle in order to drive the wrong way down a ramp and slam into Stevenson's cruiser.

Public inquiry documents say bullet fragments from Stevenson's pistol "likely" struck the killer's head, and -- about 35 minutes later -- blood on his forehead tipped off an officer who shot and killed the gunman at a gas station.

The inquiry has also noted that Stevenson had at 8:44 a.m. that morning called for the public to be notified about the killer driving a replica RCMP vehicle. Her request never received a response.

During the service, four friends of the officer noted her strong personality and sense of justice.

Her longtime friend Angela McKnight described Stevenson as a "fierce woman" who chose the RCMP over kinesiology and developed physical strength through playing rugby at university.

"Heidi surrounded herself with strong women focused on supporting each other," she said. "I know no better... no tougher, more determined woman than her."

Those watching the procession to the service also described their admiration for Stevenson, who is survived by her husband and two children.

Randy Stevenson, a military veteran, and Jan Hill, whose husband had worked with the constable, were among those waiting on the sidewalk for the procession.

The veteran, who is not related to the fallen Mountie, described her as exemplifying "what the police and the military are about," while Hill praised the officer's deep involvement in her community of Dartmouth, N.S.

The officer grew up in Antigonish, N.S., and attended university in Nova Scotia. She was with the Mounties for 23 years, developing expertise in drug recognition, general duty policing and communications. She also spent time in Ottawa as part of the RCMP musical ride, even though she had no previous experience with horses.

In a statement provided to the inquiry, the Stevenson family said community support was helpful following her killing. "There were months of meals provided and seeing the Nova Scotia Strong stickers on everyone's car meant so much. The phone call from the Prime Minister was very personal," the family said in their statement.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 29, 2022.

'Her loss is immeasurable': Slain B.C. RCMP officer worked on Burnaby detachment's homeless outreach team

Published Oct. 18, 2022

The RCMP officer who was killed on duty in Burnaby, B.C., Tuesday has been identified as Const. Shaelyn Yang, a member of the local detachment's mental health and homeless outreach team.

Speaking at an emotional news conference hours after the tragedy, the head of the Burnaby RCMP described Yang as a valued member who embraced the challenges involved in working on her specialized unit.

"She was compassionate and caring, and she brought those skills every day to her job working with our community's most vulnerable," said Chief Supt. Graham De La Gorgendiere, who at times struggled to maintain his composure.

De La Gorgendiere described the incident that cost Yang her life as senseless and tragic, and said delivering the news of her death was "probably the most difficult thing I've had to do in my career."

Officials said Yang and a Burnaby bylaw officer were called to Broadview Park on Tuesday morning, and were engaged with someone camping in a tent when an altercation erupted.

Yang was stabbed, and succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to hospital. She was 31.

"She answered the call to duty today and she paid the ultimate price," said Deputy Comm. Dwayne McDonald, commanding officer of the B.C. RCMP. "Her loss is immeasurable."

The constable was a "loving wife, a sister and a daughter," McDonald added.

A suspect was also shot during the altercation, and remained in hospital Tuesday afternoon with injuries that officials said were not life-threatening.

The RCMP provided few details about what took place in the park, citing an active investigation by B.C.'s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office, as well as a parallel investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Despite some early media reports of a "homeless encampment" at Broadview Park, authorities confirmed there was only a single tent.

Yang began her policing career in Richmond, where she lived, before graduating as a police officer in 2019. She joined the Burnaby RCMP the same year, and remained there until her death.

CONDOLENCES POUR IN

Late Tuesday afternoon, flags at the detachment and at the provincial legislature were lowered to half-mast out of respect for the fallen officer.

Speaking to reporters shortly after receiving news of Yang's death, Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth described the situation as "tragic and horrific."

"Every day, we ask thousands of men and women in uniform in this province to do their duty, keeping our community safe, keeping the public safe, knowing full well that it's an extremely dangerous job," Farnworth said, his voice shaking.

"This is the worst news that anyone wants to hear."

As word spread, messages of support began flooding in from across the province and country, including from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"My thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officer – I am keeping you in my thoughts during this terrible time," he said on Twitter.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh called the death "an unimaginable loss" and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said he was "heartbroken."

Flag raising celebrates inauguration of Maple Leaf

BY RY CLARKE - LETHBRIDGE HERALD LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER ON FEBRUARY 16, 2023.

The Royal Canadian General Stewart Branch held a ceremony at Lethbridge City Hall on Wednesday to celebrate National Flag Day. The gathering celebrated the inauguration of the flag of Canada in 1965, where it was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill.
Joined by the RCMP Veterans Association, the event highlighted their distinction of lowering the Red Ensign for the last time and raising the new Canadian flag for the first time.
“It is a flag that Canada has adopted to be our own,” said Paul Brundige, President of the General Stewart Branch No. 4.
“It gives us something that we can stand up, be proud of and wave. People know that we are who we are in the nation of nations. One of the greatest things with being a veteran is I got to wear that flag on my shoulder for 26 years serving the Canadian Forces, serving all over the world. When you wear that flag on your shoulder, people recognize it right away, there is no question who we are, and what we stand for. Celebrating Flag Day, there is a lot of pride and history behind it.”
2023 also marks a milestone for the RCMP, which is celebrating its 150 anniversary.
“In 1965, when the Canadian Ensign was lowered, and then the new Canadian Maple Leaf flag was raised, that duty was performed by RCMP members. There was a junior constable that lowered the Ensign, and then a sergeant raised the new Canadian flag,” said Ken Taylor, President of the Lethbridge Division of the RCMP Veterans Association.
“The Royal Canadian Legion here in Lethbridge has been great at perpetuating the Flag Day ceremonies, and have always invited the RCMP and the Veterans Association to participate, the same way as that we participated the first time. This is the 150th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, it is an honour to be from that organization originally as veterans.”
For many, Canada’s flag holds a significance for the symbolism that is associated with it.
“Canada has been on every UN peacekeeping mission since its inception with Lester B. Pearson (Canada’s 14th Prime Minister) brining it in. We still are there today, even with Ukraine and what is going on right now, we are there. And people recognize that flag,” said Brundige.
Paying respect to Canada’s history and honouring tradition, Wednesday’s flag raising saluted to those that call this country home.
“It has been an honour to wear the flag on my shoulder and represent Canada around the world. I have served in UN missions, and like I said, the flag is recognized immediately when people see it,” said Brundige.
